Novel idea indeed!

Excellent quote from St. John Chrysostom. He’s one of my favorites. Also demonstrates the high regard Catholics have for the scriptures. However, my point was Luther claimed everybody could interpret scripture for themselves and did not need the teaching authority of the Church. In St. John Chrysostom’s day, this was unheard of.

And my point was that the concept of Sola Scriptura was not a novel idea in the early Church. In fact, it was the prevalent idea. The "novel" idea was that the faithful needed the "authoritative" interpretation of Scripture by the Church.
