I almost bought a gun the other day. Who'll give me the slight push to send me over the threshold?

What stopped you? If you can afford to buy one, do it. Go to the shooting range and practice. There are few things I enjoy more than target practice and seeing improvement.

I almost bought a gun the other day. Who'll give me the slight push to send me over the threshold? Almost? Keep in mind when you really really need to have one, it will be waaaay to late to get one.

Personally, I hadn't owned a firearm for the past 15 years but I bought a new shotgun last week. My wife and I had been contemplating the purchase of a handgun since mid-summer, before the 911-inspired gun buying rush. We took our NRA safety classes, applied for our carry permits and were in the process of trying out various manufacturer's offerings.
Then the b@stards took out the WTC, 50 miles away. People that we had worked with in the past died there. Our priorities changed somewhat - from target/defense to defense/target - and that changed our minds from handgun to shotgun. Skeet is an eminently satisfying challenge as far as sport is concerned. And there's something about the idea of a slug generating 1000+ ft. lbs. of knockdown power at 125 yards that is a comfort to me. To say nothing of what a load of 00 buckshot will do if one is pressed by circumstance.

Well, if you have less than three now, you're borderline liberal. Will that do it?

I almost bought a gun the other day. Who'll give me the slight push to send me over the threshold? How about the fact that the govt could stop the sale of guns at any time and you would be SOL. (Shut down the instant check system due to "tech problems" and all sales stop). Get'em while you can, and don't skimp on the ammo (500 rounds per handgun and 1000 rounds per rifle minimum). The ammo you buy now may have to last you for the rest of your life. (I know, shutting down ammo and gun sales is as likely to happen as two passenger jets crashing into the WTC).

It would be nice if someone would make access of gun ranges easier for persons who wish to own a gun but, unlike me, did not have one, with parental supervision, when they were eleven years old. Maybe the gun dealers should link up with a shooting club or a commercial range for range time, or at least should offer instruction to new-gun buyers. If the military was smart, they would do the same thing to aid recruitment. To poster MadRussion, call a couple of gun dealers and find one that can give you some instruction and make you comfortable with the gun, then buy the gun from them.
