Until Sept 11, airline security would let you through with a knife as long as the blade was under 4 inches in length. I once forgot I had my hunting knife in my bag and the security guy measured it (3.5 inches) and let me through.

And--propaganda aside--there's really no reason they shouldn't still. A hijacker with even a 4" knife isn't going to do much to a planeload of people who know what he's up to. The terrorists' real weapon on 9-11 was the years of liberal conditioning the passengers and crew had received to just give the hijackers what they wanted without any resistance. Fortunately, that weapon has been completely and utterly destroyed, hopefully forever.
