And even though knowing how to use a gun is a good defense, Long said there's a better one.

"The first thing, the best thing, is don't put yourself in a situation where you need a gun," Long said.

Well, at least this was not the new changes and the "all" feature. LOL

I loved his comment you quoted, but I think he blew it with the one above. One of the major reasons to carry is protect oneself from situations one has no control over.

You are 100% correct, Mademoiselle!

It might be well to say this in Mississippi, where the criminal element isn't QUITE so aggressive, but put the guy in L.A. County for a while and see how one can "avoid" a situation where one doesn't need a gun.

However, I refuse to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I'm glad that the ladies from Southaven were offered an opportunity to learn to defend themselves.

RE:post 48

The use of a firearm in a life threatening situation is one of the most difficult things to live with after the fact. Use of deadly force is a LAST resort. Also, there may be other factors that would prevent you from prevailing even though armed, in any given situation.

Situational awareness is one of those things that fortunately can be practiced on a daily basis. Just be aware of what is going on around you, and while living your life, try not to put yourself in a place and time where the odds of confrontation are increased, if there is an alternate route.Remember, that with a firearm, comes the responsibility to do everything you reasonably can to back away and peacefully resolve the situation without the use of deadly force. As a CCW holder, you are held to a higher standard than the bad guys.

Keeping yourself out of bad situations is just another form of self defense.
