Request for comments: new feature

Posted on 10/13/2001 3:17:06 AM PDT by John Robinson

I've been tinkering with a new way to do self-search. It will display the comments as if they were in a thread, but only displays those comments addressed to you or posted by you.

Have a look at it here:

Last 100 posts involving you -- in reverse chronological order, like latest posts

New posts to you (since last time you checked) -- in forward chronological order, like a normal thread

I think this should be listed in forward chrono order, but that might make browsing your self-search awkward.

I THINK the "ALL" must cover every registered Freeper

No, just the FReepers who've posted on this thread.

The "all" feature makes me feel duped. It's as if someone replied to me and I go there and find nothing :(

the post was addressed only specifically to a couple of people and "All". I'd like to know how many people are going to get this ping!

Excellent point in case!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you click on the links after self search they do not open in a new window like they did before. Opening in a new window was really convenient. Can you restore that feature please?

Although I can think of several instances when "ALL" would have been valuable. But, with a little effort with copy and paste, you can create a ping list yourself from the thread. Only problem I have had is that in doing so, I've accidentally gone to a profile rather than copy a name and lost my reply. So, I've learned to type my replies, copy them into Word, then fill in the address box through copy and paste of names.

Is that why you used it?

I have to agree, it's excessive, it's too prone to abuse.

JOHNROB, I seem to have discovered a problem with the ALL feature!!

THIS IS MASSIVE DISRUPTION SQUARED!!!

'Tis just a problem with the current production version of self-search. The betas linked to at the top of the page correctly tell you it's everybody.

Very good.

BUT, I just received a valuable message to "all" on another thread that I would have probably missed and am glad I did not.

If people really need to "All" you, they can collect all the names and put them in the list themselves. It's just TOO EASY to flag everyone with "all," that's the problem.

Whoa! I didn't know about the 'all' feature until your 'all' post flagged me! Yuck, you are right. That needs to go.

I guess I do agree with you. I keep "All" lists by topic. It takes some work, but it also pings others who are not yet on the thread if it is a topic that I know they are interested in.

I guess the big problem is if people start using "all" just because they want to be heard, even if in a more "private" discussion or response. No one like that ever comes to FR though, do they? :~)

Now what I would really like is if someone can help me with the "p's" and "i's" and "b's" with the "<>'s", especially since the "<>'s" are caps. Sheesh!

John, re: "All."

Now when I go to Self-Search, there are these "all" messages, and they're basically from someone to someone - and I have nothing to do with the message (I just happened to on the thread.) Can you add "All" somewhere on those messages (or people) in Self-Search so we know we weren't personally responded to?

Also can you add a "Delete" button, so we can remove these "messages" from our Self-Search?

Also, could you please add a "Last" button to the forum bars. Thank you for letting us have the option to have a long thread (1-250) versus pages of 50. A "Last" button would be helpful. Thank you.
