"I am an American" Television advertisements -- Vanity
Posted on 10/12/2001 8:33:15 PM PDT by Partisan Hack
I'm sure many of you have seen the advertisements featuring many people of different ethnicities who proclaim "I am an American."
While I appreciate the purpose and intent of these advertisements, I do not appreciate the intonation of those giving the message. "I am an American" comes out sounding like a confession, not a proclamation. It's stated with the the same affect and confidence as a quivering alcoholic confessing his addiction to an AA group.
Have you seen this ad? What's your take on it?

...What bothers me most is...applying the hyphenation, ex:Italian American...Time now to begin putting America(n) first when speaking of ourselves...Italian-American doesn't seem to used much except in the case of food or in the case of describing dynamics of organized crime. In the case of "Afro-Americans" or "Latino-Americans" it is ALWAYS used by the media in the context of a community, as in cartel or some kind of political bloc.
Your wish that we all be referred to as "Americans" is I'm afraid decades away.

All this warm and fuzzy stuff reminds me what Homer would say:
" Ooh, look at me, I'm making people happy! I'm the magical man from Happyland, in a gumdrop house on Lollipop Laaaaane.....Oh by the way, I was being sarcastic!"

I LOVE Latino-American food! err, I mean Mexican.

you are a TRUE fan!

What's funny is that most blacks would like to be called "blacks", especially if you're referring to the skin color and not American blacks per se(the descendants of slaves in the contiguous USA)
You can actually hear the stumbling and fear when liberals say African-American. I pity them, so great is their fear of "us" going nuts. Once again, ugly liberal paternalist racism rearing it's "tolerant" head.

"Maybe if someone in the ad said: I'm an American and I want binLaden dead! would be more believable" - MZ
good one!

"Do the networks/stations believe half the cr@p in them? Or are they considered "brownie" points with the FCC?" CL
Tax write-offs.

Oh GAWD! I was scrolling UP the page and saw the heals and legs first.... augh!
Then the FACE! That's an American too, boys!

Why do you think 90% of them are run between 2-6am?

You can actually hear the stumbling and fear by liberals...LOL -- think the libs fear "you" going nuts if they refer to you by the wrong label? That is a funny perspective. Unfortunately Jesse Jackson was given the "honor" of speaking on behalf of labeling, um, er, "black-afro-people of color, er, um Americans."

DUDE!....I JUST ATE!!!!
To: F16Fighter
OH definitely. It's not a fear of physical assault, more like being labelled as a racist or just being yelled at. I actually feel bad because I'm sure some of them have accidentally brushed by a black person on the subway and been yelled at, unnecessarily. I've seen it happen, maybe they're just fearful of the dressing down in public.
The campus radicals change their approach when a minority comes up to them. I got into a very civil debate with the notorious Jessica Curtin at Michigan about minority retention at the school. No doubt, she held back some of her venom for fear of violating one of leftdoms prime directives.

It's nice to hear them say "I am an American" without the hyphenation. Now if only that would become the norm.

It appears there may be a two-fer-one in the upper right-hand corner. Is that an interracial Japanese-American/Arab-American-couple? And as an aside must the Indian-Native American be wearing ceremoniial garb in order for us to figure out his ethnicity? With that being said, where is the ethnic Italian-American eating his ceremonial mound of spaghetti?
To: F16Fighter
The main thrust absurdly seems to be: "Don't hate me just because I'm not Caucasian." That is the message I got too. It is condescending tripe that divides people more by constantly pointing out ethnic differences. Only a white liberal could conjure up such divisive cr*p.

It's ridiculously stupid. The fact that WASP males are shown.....let's see........once?......wasn't lost on me.
To: Skywalk
It's humorous in a way but sad. You actually see a fear in the face of people who sense they may be walking on eggshells and accused of that most heinous liberal crime -- "Bigot!!"
BTW, what was your basic gist in debating about minority retention? If "venom" is being tempered by the left just because you are a "minority" then pull out the big guns -- full phasers and photon torpedos Captain!
