"I am an American" Television advertisements -- Vanity
Posted on 10/12/2001 8:33:15 PM PDT by Partisan Hack
I'm sure many of you have seen the advertisements featuring many people of different ethnicities who proclaim "I am an American."
While I appreciate the purpose and intent of these advertisements, I do not appreciate the intonation of those giving the message. "I am an American" comes out sounding like a confession, not a proclamation. It's stated with the the same affect and confidence as a quivering alcoholic confessing his addiction to an AA group.
Have you seen this ad? What's your take on it?

My point is.. Franco = French, Italian food in a can... whats up with that?

Ah. IN order to stop a brutal intrafamily war, Chef Boyardee and his Uncle Benito each disowned the other's side of the family. As Boyardee had the market cornered in Italy for fine Italian Cuisine d'microeauave, Benito packed his family up and moved to France.
In France, they had no appreciation for anything other than snails and tortured goose liver, so they readily embraced Benito's fine brand of Italian food. However, the French being the French, they demanded he not have any foreign words in his name.
Eventually when they moved operations to North America, they added the "-American" to their name.

I've seen two different ones and the people do seem very proud to say they are American. They have people from European countries. I think the adds are ok and think there are a lot more offensive adds than those. I particularly like the plain old "American" without the hyphens!

I accept your explanation. But I must throw in a Homerism. The French are "cheese eating, surrender monkeys".
To: operation clinton cleanup
LOL, did they use surrender monkeys twice? Because I recall Groundskeeper Willie using it, when the teachers went on strike and he had to teach the French class.
more from that episode:
"talking in class..that's a paddlin'"

A good ad, I work with all kinds of minority professional groups, and oftentimes I am one of very few white people in very large groups of people, and I enjoy it. To be with people that are secure of who they are, and are secure of who I am is a great thing. I strongly suggest that freepers do some world travelling, go to a country where you are the only person that looks like you do, and rely on the kindness of strangers, it will make you a better person. Whatever your beliefs are, we are all in this boat together, and I'd rather be paddling the boat than bitching about who is on the boat! 34 posted on 10/12/01 9:05 PM Pacific by Central Scrutiniser [ Are you in the advertising (or as I like to call it, "propaganda bullshit") business? I, personally, have been to several countries (eight, I can recall right offhand) and lived VERY closely with the people in several of them, while training them to kill Communists.
I do not need you, or any other sanctimonious jerk-off, to lecture me on "tolerance" and "diversity". And neither do the vast majority of other Americans.
By the way, I find almost ALL "Public Service Announcements" (PSA's) to be nothing more than Lefty propaganda, and extremely irritating to boot. This one is no exception (no wonder I watch so little TV!)

>>>The Ad council. That's you and me Frank -- The taxpayers. The Ad Council is the U.S. Gub ment's vehicle to produce, promote, and broadcast a specific message.<<<
That makes it propaganda.

So, don't be simple minded or Neanderthal in your thinking, cause you sound no different than those Muslim Extremists spewing pure hate towards the US.
Actually, I'm not the one who's being simpleminded. The ad is simpleminded. Most of us are intelligent enough to know that every citizen who loves this country, regardless of national origin, is an American. However, we don't need some jerks from the Ad Council using our tax dollars to show a group of people with accents, national costumes and funny things on their heads stating that they're Americans. For the most part, and far more than any other nation, we've always welcomed foreigners to become Americans, and assumed that they are unless proven otherwise. What I object to is the notion of America as a tapestry when we should be promoting a national culture and the idea that we are a melting pot.
Honestly, I find the timing of the ad very suspect. We are at war against radical Islam, and the logical thing to do is to round up and deport all Muslim non-citizens, yet all I hear from the government is that we should show respect to other cultures. Bullsh*t -- some cultures don't deserve respect, and if you come here from another country, you had better show respect to the American culture. Or get lost. Or die.

Glad to catch another wrestling fan, or maybe you didn't know that used to be Hulk Hogan's theme song.

Back in the 80s when Saturday Night Main Event would come on, and I thought Wrestling was real, I was a fan.
I do love that song, though!

What Skywalk said in post 53....
I don't need the lecture from guilty white people.
Sir, as a white man, it is my burden to make sure that the feelings of all minorities are never hurt. I am your protector, and I will make sure that I tell all my fellow whites what to think. Together, we will defeat all hatred and stupidity in this world, blah blah blah....
I don't have respect for people who are different than me because of stupid ads put out by the Ad Council. That respect was instilled in me by the Holy Ghost and my parents.
