Saudi Prince Threatens Payback for Giuliani Snub (posted 10/12/01)

Billionaire Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal suggested Friday that he'll make New York pay a price for Mayor Rudy Giuliani's refusal to accept his $10 million dollar check for the Twin Tower relief fund, saying he's ready to "put his money where is mouth is."

The Saudi prince contributed the big bucks after Giuliani gave him a tour of the World Trade Center disaster site Thursday. Bin Talal said at the time, "Saudi Arabia is with the United States wholeheartedly."

But hours later the wealthy Arab released a statement saying:

"I believe the the government of the United States should reexamine its policies in the Middle East and adopt a more balanced stance towards the Palestinian cause. Our Palestinian brethren continue to be slaughtered at the hands of the Israelis while the rest of the world turns the other cheek."

Upon hearing about the bin Talal's press release, Giuliani condemned the statement as "highly irresponsible and very, very dangerous." Hizzoner's aides returned the Saudi's money after determining that his check had not yet been cashed.

The mayor's snub prompted the Saudi prince to leave in a huff for home, where he spoke to NBC's Andrea Mitchell.

"He's not backing down," Mitchell told radioman Don Imus Friday morning. "He says he has a big stake in New York (and) he puts his money where his mouth is."

Bin Talal's financial stake in the Big Apple includes a $10 billion investment in banking giant Citicorp, half ownership of the Plaza Hotel, substantial investments in the Saks Fifth Avenue department store and NewsCorp., the parent company of the New York Post and the Fox News Channel.

He also has part of his $20 billion personal fortune invested in AOL Time Warner, Apple Computer.

There's more shale oil in Canada than in the whole of the Middle East - in Australia as well.

At $30 a barrel its economic. If you are interested look up Central Pacific Minerals or Southern Pacific Petroleum 2 Aussie coompanies that have a pilot plant that's making a profit. As soon as they get the environmental issues worked out the Arab princes will become very worried.

Israel (not short of shale oil either) is working on a laser technology that liquifies the shale in situ - no environmental issues.

Its my belief that's the reason for a theoretical lid on oil prices at around $30 bbl

Rudy is pro-choice and pro-gun control, so he might not be the best VP candidate in terms of keeping the conservative base happy. Furthermore I'm very attached to Cheney, and usually avoid the "VP Replacement" threads because frankly I don't think they'll NEED a replacement.

On the other hand, Rudy's a shoe-in for some higher office or other. He was KNOWN nationwide, and was popular even before 9/11, in spite of his recent messy divorce. Now it's just unbelievable--I get calls from friends and relatives in other states, and they simply rave about the man.

I can't wait to hear what they have to say after this!

Re: Drilling in Alaska

How about we take some big oil rigs, the floating kind, and
park them in international waters just of the Saudi coast.
Then with horizontal-directional-drilling technology, we could suck all the oil we wanted
right out from under their sand covered noses.

" President Bush and Colin Powell are still saying they are happy with Saudi Arabias cooperation. "

Think about it. The Sauds have refused to freeze OBL's money. They don't seem to be cracking down on al Qaeda. The appeared to balk at the U.S. using Saudi as a base of air operations.

If I were president Bush, I would publically and profusely praise and thank Saudi Arabia for their assistance and cooperation until OBL begins to see them as a bigger enemy than the West. And if the Saudis didn't finally come around to our way of thinking, I'd begin thanking individual Saudi royal family members, by name, for all of their help towards America.

"We'll turn them against each other." President George W. Bush, 13 October 2001

"What odds do I get on a Dubya/Rudy partnership next election?"

I'll take some of that. Dubya is not going to let Cheney go. The only way Rudy would even be considered (and not much) is if Cheney dies.

If Rudy is on the ticket, I will work with everything I have against the RINO party.

"He says he has a big stake in New York (and) he puts his money where his mouth is."

...and by putting his money in the sewer too, the alleged prince hopes to accomplish what exactly?

My compliments to Mayor Giuliani. I am heartened to see that he and one or two other people in public life actually possess some dignity and self-respect.

You mispelled "lunatic", you failed to apostrophize "it's", and you obviously don't know where the shift key is on your keyboard. Furthermore, you have revealed that you know next to nothing about "foreign policy", Rudy Giuliani, or New York City.

Don't make me raspberry you again, bub...

try responding with less rhetoric, more sense and with-out drooling on the keyboard.

Don't you mean "without"? :P

I say give them back their four-wheel drives too.

Adam Lebor wrote in The Budapest Sun:

"US and Western troops will battle highly mobile Taliban fighters roaring across the valleys in Toyota four-wheel drive vehicles, supplied by Saudi Arabia. The same Saudi Arabia, an utterly corrupt Islamic monarchy with a putrid human rights record, that is a pillar of American, and Western, foreign policy in the Middle East. There has been much coverage of the Taliban’s bizarre restrictions, but little outrage over the weekly spectacle of public beheadings of transgressors against Islamic law that take place in Saudi Arabia every Friday. Not to mention that Saudi Arabia has for several years been one of just three countries in the world to recognize the Taliban regime (the others are Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates). "

Are Saudi princes involved in international sex trade?

Ten million does seem a bit much to pay for such publicity but ... when you consider the win:win nature of each side's use of the story (and the fact that it didn't actually cost a dime) ... I suppose all are getting their money's worth out of it.

Yep, they're cut from the same cloth...

Reminds me of another wealthy clown (Ted Turner) who thinks his money gives his mouth more prominence than it deserves.
