The U.N. World Food Program said it was racing against time to send badly needed food shipments into Afghanistan before winter set in. ``It is one of the most difficult tasks WFP has faced in its history. The harsh winter is approaching and many human lives are at stake,'' WFP spokesman Francesco Luna told a news conference in Islamabad.

The Afghani people have been starving for years under the Taliban regime. But now that this conflict gives them the ability to put an anti-American spin on relief efforts, feeding these people is suddenly the most important mission in the history of the UN.
