I think I might have that story beat. We got stuck in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride a few years back down at Disney World for about 20 minutes. We had to listen to the same %^#$%#$^%$@ loop of 32 bars of "Yo, ho, yo, ho, yo, ho..... a pirate's life for me" over and over and over and over and over.

My husband and I are both musicians. THIS was real torture. Trust me.

I'm sure that if you try, you can replace it with the "Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy" song of Ren & Stimpy... NUTS!!!!! If I can't go to sleep tonight, it's your fault!

No one's yet mentioned my all-time un-favorite song....

"Oh........ I've got a brand new pair of roller skates, you've got a brand new key...."

Sung in a really whiny girly voice, of course.

Easy. Start thinking about "The Night Chicago Died" by Paper Lace.

OMG - you read my mind.

That always works when I can't get "Brand New Key" or "My Name is Mikey, I Have a Nickel" out of my head.

Great story! Makes a lot of sense to me (I studied musicology and music history in school - yeah, don't ask :-).

What is the source of this? "Times"? Which "Times"? I'd like to seek permission to reprint to send to all my music friends as Christmas presents .... or better yet, I'll hold off until April Fool's Day. :-] (This is a serious question, by the way.)

The worst song has to be "MacArthur Park". A lot of other really bad songs have been parodied succesfully so that you can sing mildly amusing lyrics instead of horrible ones. I'd suggest trying to create alternate words to any tune you're stuck with. It could help.

Fort Marcy Park is melting in the dark
And a white house lawyer's going down

Someone found Vince Foster in the woods
I don't think I can take it
'Cause I'm quite sure that they faked it
And I'm sure that we will never know the truth
The truuuuuuuuuuuuuuuth

You need an Aluminum Foil Deflector Beanie to keep the government from beaming that song into your brain.

Conversely, you can start singing the them song to Pinky and the Brain.

Yes, Pinky and the Brain's a good little ditty... and amazingly easy lyrics!

They're Pinky and the Brain, they're Pinky and the Brain, one is a genius, the other's insane...

Ya know, it was forwarded to me from my sister, who got it as a forward. So I don't know where it originated.

Hey Skooz! Maybe you could substitute Mr. Pink's ditty (see post #5) that goes like this:
I shot the fridge out
But I did not shoot the microwave
Haven't been able to get that one out of my head since I saw it. But at least it's based on a better song! :-)

"What are we going to do tonight, Brain?"

"Same thing we do every night, Pinky... try to take over the world by implanting "Feelings" and "MacArthur Park" in the brain of every person in the world. As they are incapacitated by sheer horror, the world will become ours!"

"Narf, Brain!"

At first I thought your post was a joke, but upon reading it, I see that it is actually a pretty good essay. Thanks.

Bingo! I did a little sleuthing (google.com search on the author's name) and followed the links around to the link here.

So I just e-mailed it to myself to make things legal (hey, if they offer, I'll accept! :-).

More antidote/alternatives. (Agreed....they must be more annoying. You must keep rotating them until your mind gives up thinking "musically" all together or a palatable tune enters involuntarily.)

I Wanna Rock and Roll All Night (repetetive) KISS.

The Theme to "The Fall Guy" sung (ECCHHK!) by Lee Majors

The Theme to "Walker Texas Ranger" by (ECCHHK!) Chuck Norris

Anything by Air Supply

Don't Worry Be Happy

If this method doesn't work....try catching the FatBoy Slim video with Christopher Walken dancing. THAT's entertaining. The man cracks me up and might get your mind off of the crappy song.
