The Associated Press Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001; 1:19 p.m. EDT TEMPLE HILLS, Md. –– A Metro subway station just outside Washington was closed Tuesday after an armed man scuffled with a police officer and a jar with an unknown substance fell onto the platform, officials said. Fire department hazardous-material teams in protective rubber suits responded after several people reported being sick. Mark Brady, a Prince George's County Fire Department spokesman, said a man dispensed some type of product in the subway station. "That product made people on the train sick, with dry throats and nausea," he said. About 15 people were isolated. Officials who run the Metro subway system said a scuffle broke out between a transit officer and man on a train after the passenger pulled a knife and gun. The train stopped at the Southern Avenue station on the Green Line and the fight continued onto the platform. Transit police took the man into custody. Officials said the officer and the armed man were not injured.

Maybe he was taking his fecal sample to the doc's office to be checked for worms or something. This is getting crazier and crazier.

I hope the jar wasn't filled with placebo.

These day, that stuff could spread like wildfire!

Yeah, what's with this guy? I usually leave my gun and knife in the truck when I deliver my samples.

a jar with an unknown substance

Did they think to ask the guy what was in the jar so they could avoid a hysterical reaction?

I wonder if anyone at the FBI or elsewhere is investigating the "incidents" as a possible psy-op on the part of bin Laden? In other words, he still has cells operating but they take no "illegal" action - only appear to be distributing toxic substances. If there is no law against such an act, then they go free (to hatch something else). Besides, on the other hand, nobody has been caught yet. So if harmless, all they are doing is stirring the pot. Then, when everyone thinks all is well.....you get the picture.

Are we beginning to see some mass hysteria? Just a question because I don’t have an answer.

Does anyone know what the symptoms of Anthrax are? I'm assuming that the media is not diseminating this info. because if they did, half the country would be heading for emergency rooms complaining of Anthrax symptoms.

I have heard that there's a 60 day incubation period. So, I figure if there really is something to this terrorism-Anthrax link, we could start seeing more.

Some thoughts...

The "unknown substance" could not have been a nerve agent. They cause excessive salivation, not a dry throat.

The "substance" was not a blister agent since they burn the nasal passages, throat, lungs and eyes.

The "substance" was not a biological agent since they take hours/days/weeks to affect a person.

This sounds to me like a bunch of panicky people. OBL must be in his cave, laughing his head off. Come on, people, shape up and START THINKING!!!

Since he was taken into custody, and so many witnesses, I wonder how fast before we learn if the guy was from the middle east?

The symptoms are similar to the flu in the early stages. The incubtion period can last anywhere from a few days to two months, but usually takes about a week.

Anthrax symptoms are very similar to the common flu virus. Incubation varies, but I think is much shorter than 6o days. Probably only 12-14.

30 years ago I received training in this stuff (and chem and rad) at a base down south. It has been so long I cannot remember all, other than Anthrax then was described as a "poor man's atomic weapon."

What kind of perfume, or toad, does this?

WHEREAS the successful prosecution of the war required every possible protection against espionage and against sabotage to national-defense materials, national-defense premises, and national-defense utilities, as defined:

NOW, THEREFORE, by virtue of the authority vested in me as President of the United States, and Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy, I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of War, and the Military commanders whom he may from time to time designate, whenever he or any designated Commander deems such action necessary or desirable, to prescribe military areas in such places and of such extent as he or the appropriate Military Commander may determine, from which any or all persons may be excluded, and with respect to which, the right of any persons to enter, remain in, or leave shall be subject to whatever restrictions the Secretary of War or the appropriate Military Commander may impose in his discretion. The Secretary of War is hereby authorized to provide for residents of any such area who are excluded therefrom, such transportation, food, shelter, and other accommodations as may be necessary, in the judgement of the Secretary of War, of the said Military Commander, and until other arrangements are made, to accomplish the purpose of this order. The designation of military areas in any region or locality shall supersede designations of prohibited and restricted areas by the Attorney General under the proclamations of December 7 and 8, 1941, and shall supersede the responsibility and authority of the Attorney General under the said Proclamations in respect of such prohibited and restricted areas.

I hereby further authorize and direct the Secretary of War and the said Military Commanders to take such other steps as he or the appropriate Military Commander may deem advisable to enforce compliance with the restrictions applicable to each Military area hereinabove authorized to be designated, including the use of Federal troops and other Federal Agencies, with authority to accept assistance of state and local agencies. I hereby further authorize and direct all Executive commanders in carrying out this Executive Order, including the furnishing of medical aid, hospitalization, food, clothing, transportation, use of land, shelter, and other supplies, equipment, utilities, facilities, and services.

This order shall not be construed as modifying or limiting in any way the authority heretofore granted under Executive Order 8972, dated December 12, 1941, nor shall it be construed as limiting or modifying the duty and responsibility of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with respect to the investigation of alleged acts of sabotage or the duty and responsibility of the Attorney General and the Department of Justice under the Proclamations of December 7, and 8, 1941, prescribing regulations for the conduct and control of alien enemies, except as such duty and responsibility is superseded by the designation of military areas hereunder.
