Many arabs and Muslims reacted to the bombing with shock and outrage, and warned that it would lead to retaliation against America.
Shaaban, a taxi driver in Egypt, said: "What are the Americans thinking? The Afghans will hit back and strike the heart of America. This conflict will spread and engulf the whole world."
Asma, a 32-year-old housewife in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, said: "It is haram [forbidden] that the richest people in the world are killing the poorest people in the world.'
In the West Bank town of Ramallah, Hassan Youssef, of the Islamist militant group Hamas, said the US strikes were "pure terrorism''.
In Pakistan, the influential and Taliban-sympathetic Afghan Defence Council, made up of more than 30 religious and militant groups, called for a holy war.
One leader, Riaz Durana, said: "It is the duty of every Muslim to support their brothers in this critical hour. We will support the Taliban physically and morally against the aggression of America."
Munawar Hassan, deputy chief of Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakistan's most powerful religious political party, called the strikes "an attack against Islam". He believed there would be a "serious backlash" within Pakistan's armed forces against the President, General Pervez Musharraf.
The Pakistani government, the only administration to recognise the Taliban, said it hoped the strikes would avoid civilian casualties. Shamshad Ahmad, Pakistan's ambassador to the United Nations, said: "It remains our hope that United States and its Allies' actions remain clearly targeted ... and every care will be taken to minimise harm to the Afghan people who have already suffered the ravages of conflict for more than two decades.''
While many Arab governments were cautious in their reaction, Iraqcalled the strikes "treacherous aggression" by "enemy planes". President Saddam Hussein said the strikes would destabilise the world. "This style will only lead to more instability and lawlessness in the world. America might increase the use of force and include other countries," he said after convening an emergency meeting of his cabinet.
In Iran, a spokesman for the foreign ministry said: "These attacks, which have been launched regardless of the world public opinion, especially the Muslim nations, will damage the innocent and oppressed Afghans and are unacceptable."
Funny. I was under the impression that the strike against "the heart of America" already happened on 9/11/01.
It is haram [forbidden] that the richest people in the world are killing the poorest people in the world.
Why did the 'poorest people in the world' attack the 'richest people in the world'??? And, why are they financed by billionaire Saudi Usama bin Laden? I hardly think he's "poor".
I hope we wipe this evil plague from the earth.
The independent is quoting Taxi drivers and using that as a headline.
They need to get better sources.
Oh, and the teachings of the wonderful peaceful Koran... since the vast majority are illiterate, the preachings from the Koran goes on and on without verification. Anyone with half a brain would realize that Allah and his promise of 72 virgins is bogus.
They'll end up killing more civilians than the U.S..
So that's why the rich Saudis refuse to absorb or provide for the poor Palestinians, and why they in turn sided with Saddam over the infidel playboys of the Saudi and Kuwaiti royals.
They would be better appealling to our mercy and better angels than threatening us. There is an angel in the whirlwind, guiding our efforts, not theirs.
hey...hey....WHO started this???
True but we will be blamed for it, and the TV images on Arab networks will all scream "US Carnage Against Islam!".
On a lighter note, here is a pic of a jihadist boob in Quetta Pakistan who lit himself on fire while trying to burn Old Glory.
But it's ok for them to kill the richest? No liberalism here, eh?
US strikes were "pure terrorism''
Sure, and their attacks were just good clean fun?
"This style will only lead to more instability and lawlessness in the world. America might increase the use of force and include other countries,"
A-rab fear mongering at it's finest.
"These attacks, which have been launched regardless of the world public opinion,
And they're saying public opinion supported the attack against the U.S.?
These people are extremely uneducated, aren't they? They sound like the liberals we have in our own country. When it rains, they think someone is peeing on them!
