Newsweek poll: 61% of Americans oppose cut in Israel ties

By Ha'aretz Service

A poll of 1,000 American adults conducted by Newsweek magazine revealed that most Americans are against a reduction in ties between Israel and the United States. Sixty-one percent of those polled disagreed with the statement that the U.S. should reduce its ties with Israel.

Similarly, 63 percent said a move away from Israel would not bring about a reduction in terrorism. Just 22 percent said that the U.S. should reduce its links to Israel.

According to the poll, Americans do, however, view their nation's Middle East policies as one of the major causes of terrorist attacks on U.S. targets. Fifty-eight percent of those polled said that America's relationship with Israel was a large contributing factor in the attacks on the United States on September 11.

Forty-seven percent said the terrorists carried out the attack because of their opposition to the Gulf War and U.S. military presence in the Persian Gulf.

When asked whether the Unites States should consider changing its policies in the Middle East to try to reduce anti-American sentiment, 46 percent of those taking part in the poll said that change should be considered.

The poll also revealed that President George W. Bush's approval rating has stayed at 84 percent - almost identical to the rating he received in the last Newsweek Poll one week ago. Eighty-eight percent of Americans said that they approved of his handling of the terrorist attacks.

This was obvioulsy a "PUSH" poll. It was probably phrased "Do you favor abandoning the land of sweet baby Jesus to the horrors of an Islamic holocaust?"

Have you wondered why no country has spoken up urging the inclusion of Israel in the coalition?

The BIG LIE theory proven.

Israel IS in the coaltion...or coalitions. Israel is providing intellignce info and military preparedness. Bush called Sharon to inform of yesterday's operations beforehand.

Israel has supporters all over the globe, I have posted many articles about rallies for Israel - and many articles from many nations supporting Israel.

Clearly this poll upset you in some way. Don't let it get you down.

I'm opposed to any change whatsoever in our relationship with Israel. Particularly changes desired by Mr. bin Laden and his ilk. To do so would be to cave in to terrorism. We must stand next to Israel against her (and our) enemies. Part of the reason all this terrorism was done on 9/11/01 was to force such changes upon us.

I'll be damned if I'll support any changes due to force.

They can forget about that.

In fact, I'd like to see aid to Israel doubled, as a how-do-you-do to these terrorists. Israel is the only democracy in the whole region, and has been under terrorist attack since the late 40's, and we should stand with the Israeli people.

The hell with that! Israel can stand on it's own, if all these fascist terrorist attacks would stop. Until they do, we must aid them to the hilt.

As an American with a strong Protestant background, I think you're wrong. In fact, I know it. My family is from Virginia, and my father was a minister moving around the country when I was growing up.

Support for Israel is broad and deep among the Protestant community throughout America. I know for sure that these attacks on NYC and the Pentagon have only made that support stronger.

In short, there's no need for any concern regarding support for Israel. It is strong and firm among the Protestant backbone in middle America.

You are reaching, Veronica. The last time Bush called Sharon was to tell him to shut his goddam trap (that's Texan for "unacceptable"). Sharon understands Texan real good and decided that Israel approves the action against Afganistan after all and doesn't mind a tiny bit being left out of the action. Then Wolfowitz (however it's spelled) was told to get on the wagon or get off (exit stage left) and the word was sent to Fox (TV, not Vincente) to cool it with Netanyahu (exit stage right). All this does is delay the contest until after bin Laden,of course, but with two big differences:

(1) People are questioning our policies in the Middle East and actually looking at it.

(2) Bush has shown (himself, most importantly) that AIPAC and the media can be beaten.

LOL.

So I guess you are calling Dan Rather a liar now - and Peter Jennings - BOTH of whom reported that Bush called Sharon to inform hi of the events.

I guess truth really IS the first casualty of war!

You are the one stretching....and wishing....and hoping.

Stop calling Ari Fleischer a liar. It's offensive.

Bush has shown (himself, most importantly) that AIPAC and the media can be beaten. The media will be beaten in time, and no one even has to understand exactly who and what the media are. All it takes to beat the media is to sue it for hate crime. The irony is that the media built up the Hate Crime weapon ostensibly to protect blacks, but obviously they had their own interest group at heart, not realizing that once the weapon is out in the open, anyone can use it. Looking at the newspapers and movies, you could have a field day looking for hypothetical defendants in a massive Hate Crime suit. The first few suits might lose, but eventually as the issues become known, there would definitely be some victories.

Bwaaaaaaaaa. The old 'the Jews own the media' slurs. Old anti-semite canards. Can't you nutcakes come up with something more original? Your fantasies about the media...and BUSH are hilarious.

What part of Ari's statement that the US and Bush stand by Israel is tough for you to grasp?

Oh, and btw. Watch that butterfly ballot. It's a duzy.

LOL.

You spelled doozy wrong. You anti-Israel types are rather poorly educated.

I told you another thread who I will vote for. I will vote for Bush of course - because as Ari says - Bush is an "especially" pro-Israel President.

To all the folks who think we should sever our ties with Israel, and the posters on this site seem to be mostly good and patriotic Americans, I have one question. A serious one:

Do you really want America to allow the dismantling of Israel and the shipment of its citizens all over the world? Seriously?

Forget the errors made by the formation of Israel, if there's an argument to this. Forget what the Muslims say, Israel is a little country the size of New Jersey. It isn't as if any of the huge Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran or Iraq are stepping up to the plate offering the Palestinians land that they may have a home of their own. Forget the many arguments yay or nay and there's many and plenty.

Would you really be content to sit by and have America allow takeover of Israel by the Muslims and watch Israeli citizens loaded in boats to be deported to ports unknown?

Even the 39% of the people in that poll would change their minds if they had to watch the weeping and death that would take place at such an event.

Is this the kind of country we are? The sort that would allow a nation that WE helped form to be dismantled for what? Palestinians? There has NEVER been a country called Palestine.

Do you really think America would, or should, ever allow this to happen?

I think we'd be not much better than the radical Muslims. We wouldn't even be the America I know if we stood by and allowed such a thing.

Or do we give up honor and humanity because, heck, it's only Israel, we don't care about them?

I cannot even conceive that honorable Americans would ever espouse such tyranny.

There's plenty of room for compromise in the middle east as regards the Palestinian problem. Only the Muslims do NOT want compromise. They want Israel GONE. Whether or not they are justified in this stand given events as far back as biblical times and as recent as 1948, in either case there's been plenty of time for them to get over it and get on with their lives. This hatred of that barren and oil-less strip of desert known as Israel, is a hatred that's been cultivated and nurtured through the years. It's totally unreasonable. These people *could* try and make life better within their borders instead of wasting their lives hating a country and using all resources to eliminate it. Just a suggestion here.

Do you really think America should stand by and let them have their unreasonable way?

Could you sit and watch the dismantling of Israel and feel okay about it?

I'd be so ashamed of my country for it would no longer be the America I know.

Well stated...! And all true.

But you fail Pat to grasp the degree of animus towards Jews/Israel that some of these characters feel. It far outdistances their love of America and their understanding of America's world mandate to protect democracies everywhere.

But Bush understands as do most Americans and that is what really matters.

"43% said we should NOT change Middle East policy. I disagree with this. I am tired of the USA being the "World's Sugar-Daddy."

We send the Arab nations billions every year. They don't use the money to help their poor citizens. They use our money to buy arms that they may one day use against us.
