Taliban vow not to turn over bin Laden even if sufficient evidence provided

Updated on 2001-10-05 12:46:54

DUBAI, October 05 (PNS): Afghanistan's ruling Taliban has said they would not hand over Osama bin Laden even there was evidence to implicate him in last month's attacks on the United States.

Taliban's ambassador to Pakistan, Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef, told the United Arab Emirates' Al-Khaleej newspaper the movement would "thoroughly check" U.S. documents linking bin Laden to the devastating attacks on New York and Washington before putting him on trial in an Islamic sharia court.

"We will not give Osama bin Laden to the United States even if we are presented with evidence implicating him in the September 11 attacks," Zaeef told the Arabic-language daily.

"And if we get from them (United States) such evidence, we will check it thoroughly and then we will conduct a trial in a sharia court. If this court convicts him, then we will see then what we will do," he added.

Zaeef's comments were the first indication by Afghanistan's hardline Islamic rulers that they would not hand over bin Laden under any circumstances.

Zaeef told al-Khaleej that he still hoped for a "peaceful resolution" to the standoff between Washington and Kabul.

"Negotiations are the way to solve problems, war will only complicate things," he said.

Actually, once you're dead, things will be a lot less complicated for the rest of the world.

That's because they can't turn him over even if they wanted to. Osama tells the Taliban what to say and do. Taliban are a bunch of osamawhiped cowards.

It appears that's what they are saying, in their own words.

No chance a sharia court would do a thing. Sharia court is their own interpretatiop of Islamic religious law. Sharia is not codified or uniform. they could make up the rules according to their own sect. It's like going to trial before a church board for discipline, in western terms. That would be like the Taliban's version of the OJ Trial.

So, yeah, its pretty much a death warrant on themselves.

Well, I was referring to the osama-whipped cowards part. They did not say (with my best accent with inflections) "We aw usama wheeped cowhads!"

But, yeah, they might as well have.

Please don't tell me this surprises anyone.

It has been said the Palestinians have never missed an opportunity, to miss an opportunity. Looks like the Taliban have retained the Palestinians for consultants on Strategy and Public Relations.

That's right. Bin Laden calls the shots, not the Taliban. It's kind of ridiculous even to report what the Taliban says day by day, their changing lying press-releases, as if they mean anything. They mean nothing. The only thing that matters is when and how we go in, and what we do when we get there.

They can't turn him over because then he squeals on them, and then they're dead meat too. Even if they didn't do anything, he's probably told them that if they turn him over, he'll implicate them.

They're caught between a rock and a hard place anyway. If they don't turn bin Laden over to the US, the US will bring them down. If they do turn over bin Laden, Muslim fundamentalists will bolt.

There's only one way out for the Taliban: arrange to have their unwelcome house guest assassinated. The only question is how they will make it look: like (a) an accident, (b) suicide, (c) murder by the Northern Alliance, (d) murder by bin Laden's own associates.

I'd go with (d), perhaps with a bomb planted at a meeting (similar to Hitler and the General's Plot, though with perhaps a more successful result).

Thus in one stroke, the Taliban can not only get rid of bin Laden, but they can decapitate his entire organization by arresting the surviving leadership for his murder. Then the Taliban absorbs the rank-and-file of the bin Laden organization and becomes stronger.

I see a very brief and explosive future for Osama bin Laden.

I like the Israeli's idea of the gift cell-phone (or some other kind of highly desired "special" untraceable "gift" phone that explodes right by your ear.

Yeah a Mossad agent had infiltrated Hamas (I think it was Hamas) befriended one of their leaders and eventually gave him a phone for a present. When the guy answered his new phone...Boom! blew his head right off. The Israelis know how to get the job done. This was a few years ago.
