I think the sign of God is not the cross itself, but the response to it by the men who needed the symbol of hope to keep going.

Couldn't have said it any better. The fact that there would be beams there is no surprise. But where the beams are cut are interesting in that they really do look like a "cross" in the religious sense. And it looks like it was found upright in the rubble. At least that one picture shows it sticking out. Anything that gives these men hope is worth it.

Haven't we all had those times of great need, when we found comfort and strength to keep going, from some smallest "sign." And the fact is, that God is constantly giving us signs of His love and care. It's just that we're not always picking up on them so well. (Just speaking for myself here.)
