You know, I've risen to Falwell's defense before, so I cannot be credibly accused of some sort of anti-evangelical bias. But, if nothing else, Falwell's timing and delivery were simply awful. A disgrace. More damning, those words no doubt have proven to be a stumbling block to those outside Christ. And Falwell certainly ought not be mentioned in the same breath as Isaiah or Ezekiel or, indeed, any of the other Old Testament prophets.

Once again, as in my response to Taliesin, I agree that you have a point. My point is simply that your point is not Steyn's point. Here, once again, is what he says:

What matters about the Revd Jerry Falwell, who declared that the mass slaughter was God’s judgment on gays, feminists et al, is not that he’s a social conservative (as I am) but that he’s a heartless jerk.

Steyn does not mention timing, he does not mention claims to inspiration (nor their absence). All he says is that for saying that this was God's judgment on people who contemptuously reject the creation ordinances of God, and on a society that embraces that rejection, he is "a heartless [not tone-deaf, not theologically unsound, not ill-timed, but "heartless"] jerk.

And as I explained, yes, he is in the same class (as far as Steyn is concerned) as Biblical prophets, who also dared to link national morality with national disasters in both pagan nations and the covenant people, on occasion. If Falwell was a jerk merely for saying it, then so would they be.

In that, Steyn is an idiot. I won't never read him again, but he's lost me for this column, and I don't feel I've lost a thing.
