I'm hoping I remember this all correctly. (Think I must have read it in Vanity Fair recently, but not certain.) Chelsea has been spending a lot of time in NYC (this was before the attacks) going to clubs and hanging out with the rich and famous yout's of America. One of her guy pals is an heir to some fortune or other, wish I could remember which one. They spend a lot of time in these clubs apparently. She was probably staying at the apartment of one or the other of her friends, after a very late night out.

I have a feeling Hillary was just trying to cover up what Chels was actually up to. Hillary is SO into coverups, it's what always trips her up...
