To: F.J. Mitchell....."Their sweat will help settle the dust." ....I like that line!...Is that original?
You are right.
Patience and a cool head is called for. I have many misgivings about Bush, but he is playing it cool and I support his approach in this.
From experience I can tell you that the best way to get your ass kicked in a fight is to get mad. Perseverance and a will to win can be very costly if you are out numbered or out classed.
Cheers:^)

I don't have a link; check through the Seattle Times & Seattle P-I archive stuff.
I think I have some other stuff on it. I'll see if I can find it.
ANWR ends at the shoreline, Bush wants the ANWR & offshore for you-know-who. Throw a pipeline over to the Canadian fields & the bucks really add up.
The North Slope & Canadian gas reserve is still awaiting transport.

Everyone praised the President's speech to Congress, yet perhaps they didn't really hear his words. In fact, he has said in every speech and interview, " The American people are going to have to be patient" This is a different kind of enemy, a different kind of war. We are not going to see what we are used to seeing when we have a military action.
I think the President has a good handle on human nature. We want instant gratification. He knew this would take a while and some would start getting impatient wanting to see the bombs dropping over the Middle East yesterday if not sooner.

"How can any members of Congress advocate drilling in the arctic with a straight face, without supporting this legislation? Obviously, the only logical reason is that they care more about making oil companies money, than protecting American consumers." Bingo! And Bush and Cheney are big oil men.

In fairness To President Bush and Vice President Cheney -- and to afford our own intelligence the minimal dignity of avoided insult -- both gentlemen may be counted upon to serve all of our interests well into the forseeable future.
As I have railed here for years now was the inevitable consequence of the path we were following -- all of our lives -- including those of Messrs Bush and Cheney -- and of all we love -- and the very survival of Judeo/Christian Western [IE: Human] Civilization itself -- are at stake here and now.
And oil is ALL of our lives' blood!

Thanks, as far as I know the line is original, I pulled it out of my head. Could have been said before but I hadn't heard it.

The US has not won a war since 1945. We've only come to a draw, or other inconclusive outcomes due to our irrational fear of great powers conflicts that comes from listening to Carl Sagan and reading "On The Beach". Our enemies have used this fact to our detriment time and time again. They know that the "sensitive" Americans do not have the stomach for all out war. We have forgotten that the ONLY objective of any war is victory and unconditional surrender by the enemy. Short of that, it is only a half a#$@d war.
My prediction - if the US fails to overcome this internally derived shortcoming, we will lose WWIII and be conquered. You read it here first.

I grew up reading Plato. My TV is gathering dust. And yet, I am very impatient for the US to shed this disgusting, naive and pathetic shell of utopianism, sensitivity and, irrational fear of taking strong action, that has dogged us since 1945. "Oh... my... God.... If we do THAT, then it will start WWIII! Ooooo nooooo! We're dooooomed". Sorry about the brash chariciture, but don't you agree that perhaps, one of the reasons why we have never resolved a single geopolitical situation completely in our favor since '45 might just have to do with our own flawed psychology? I think Reagan was on the right track with his hints of brinksmanship.... after all, brinksmanship is something that the East is much more comfortable with than the West. Ronnie was definitely on to something. Unfortunately it appears the lesson went right over our heads.
The sooner we can leave classic Western liberal thought patterns and their ally, paralysis, behind us, the sooner we can start to dig ourselves out of our hole. Hopefully this will happen before it is too late.

All of that is very well and good--except that the ONLY way to fight a war is to fight to win. One does not win if one is not prepared. The USA is not prepared to win ANYTHING in Afghanistan at this point--but it's only been 3 weeks since WTC. The stories emanating from "informed sources" are, for all we know, just stories--rehashes of Brothers Grimm.
We are at the end of Chapter One--and have not yet turned the page to Chapter Two. We will prevail, because we will prepare, and we will fight to win.
