Great post. Somebody should post the fantastic Times of London article which described the first Iraqi nuclear test, conducted in a shaft tunneled under a lake southwest of Baghdad in 1988.

If you have a link to it, I'd like to read it. I just watched an interesting piece a few weeks ago Iraq. It seems that Soddom was trying to construct a super gun similar to the one the Germans had used in France to bombard England. As Im sure you can guess he was planning on using it to devestate Israel but fortunately the Scientist died and the UN found it before he had a chance to complete it.

I'll look for it. The signature of the test explosion was registered as nearly invisible because of the presence of the lake above it.

"Destroyed after the Gulf War. "
I was watching this on the History Channel and from what they were saying it wasnt destroyed but had not been completed due to the death of the scientist who was overseeing the project. Then they went on to say that after the Gulf War it was dismantled (destroyed) and they later found that he had been ordering these parts to build the gun from British who were unknowingly supplying these parts through other purchasers.

"I was watching this on the History Channel." That program is where most of my information on this subject came from.

Great post. But, the way I think about this situation, especially with Iran and Pakistan in mind, having or been close to have nuclear weapons, is like comparing an army armed with muskets circa 1800, against an army armed with modern rapid fire Gattling guns.
We as a nation with our arsenal of weapons, can cover and destroy the world 10 times over, before those countries even realize what hit them.
Guess what, they know it very well and they are scared to death...one wrong move their part or somebody associated with them (bin Laden for instance), and their country will cease to exist as we know it. They just do not have the fire power, including the Chinese for that matter, to distroy United States. They might inflict some heavy wounds to us, granted, but their country will be evaporated.
They will allways remember what happend on August 6th 1945 at 0600 hour in Hiroshima. They might be fanatics, but my gut feeling tells me that they love their children too.

"The Brits, confiscated the two pieces of the barrel, in a ship heading for Jordan. "
Thats what i thought but werent those two pieces built by them as well? I was thinking that it was their suspicions about the 2 pieces that led to the confiscation.
