Fired Conservative Columnist Anne Coulter Getting 'Great Publicity'
CNS News ^ | 10/2/01

Conservative columnist Ann Coulter, fired from her contributing editor perch at the National Review Online, blames it on free-speech hysteria in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks. In a recent online column, Coulter opined that the United States should respond forcefully to the terrorist attacks: "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity," she said. The comment provoked an uproar, and the National Review Online subsequently refused to run another Coulter piece in which she referred to "swarthy males." When Coulter complained, she was fired. Tuesday's Washington Post quotes Coulter as saying she doesn't need friends like that. "Every once in awhile they'll throw one of their people to the wolves to get good press in left-wing publications," she told the newspaper. National Review Online Editor Jonah Goldberg told the Post, "We didn't feel we wanted to be associated with the comments expressed in those two columns." Coulter told the Washington Post she's getting great publicity as a result of the flap.

You bet your ass we would.

In fact, the desire to invade our nation, kill our leaders, and convert us all to Islam, is what we find horrific in the mind of Osama bin Laden and company.

I want to challenge you to think about this.

Let's see. The enemy declares "kill all Americans where you find them ", then follows by killing thousands and targeting leadership as a failed bonus. They are indeed invading and killing with a long term mission of converting the world to Islam.

Our response, per Coulter, would be truly "proportional", to use a phrase in vogue with the unswarthy.

Coulter is the rarest of all birds. She is a terrific writer with a brilliant mind and a clear viewfinder, unblemished with pc crap.

Please show where the word "force" appears in Anne's column.

"We should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity,"

Please tell me you recognize the forceful conotations of the words "invasion" and "kill".

"Dishonest" is exactly right. You have intentionally misquoted Coulter - because quoting her correctly would inconvenience your point.

Stay tuned for the next installment of Angelo's Psychic Ramblings!

"We should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity,"

Here's the quote....

Her words... not mine.

Rationalizing and parsing them, does not excuse them.

You can not forcibly convert someone to Christianity. In fact you or I can not convert anyone to Christianity.

Is that so? During the Inquisition, the Jews in Spain were forced to convert on pain of torture and death. I appreciate that most Christians nowadays have more enlightened views about freedom of worship.

Doesn't anyone else think that this statement was hyperbole? When I first read it, I thought it was funny! I still do!

Of course it was hyperbole. Congratulations for having the IQ points and the sense of humor to understand what you're reading.

For Coulter, this could mean a career relegated to the angry fringe, on the outside looking in.

Then she would fit in well at the Weekly Standard.

If you don't understand the relationships between verbs and their objects, contact your local 4th grade grammar teacher. But I don't blame you for preferring to be thought stupid rather than dishonest.

"We should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity,"

Which is exactly what the Muslims wish to do to this country. Read your Middle East/African history. Islamic thought is very basic in its program: complete and total immersion...you WILL adapt and conform, or die...social darwinism in its most perverted form. Anne is a VERY smart woman...she understands this about Islam. Reacting to Barbara Olsen's death or not, this reaction is not at all surprising or illogical. It is the language those awful evil murderers understand...and it is in direct level with Jonah's logic of giving full immersion of American involvement in Africa. There are still 'third world' countries around for a reason: because they do not have western civilization yet.

I know what Anne is saying: are we just going to stand there with our fly unzipped or are we going to do it?

thats something you men should understand...or should I talk with your wives/girlfriends/significant others about your lovemaking techniques??? LOL

I know EXACTLY what their intent is/was.

But I wonder if we REALLY would be discussing this if she had said budhism instead of Christianity.

I know it's pure speculation on my part, but I don't think a single feather would have been ruffled here, or anywhere for that matter, if she had. I think there would have been more belly laughter, to be sure. But I think Ann would still have an outlet for her column, and instead of bashing her, we''d all be talking about how funny she is.

Don't be too offended when I say that I don't believe you on this.

I contend that the Bible says an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, that Anne in her educated observance of events and the cultural divide that we stand upon presents a problem that the Muslims have worked out quite well in their minds...and that the only response they will understand is the same one they threw in our faces: convert, or die.

This is irrelevant, if the Bible prohibits our use of such a tactic.

We may righteously kill the aggressors, but threatening to cause the death of whole populations if they will not "convert" to Christianity is Biblically verboten.

Therefore, it is a tactic which we as Christians may not employ -- period.

However, being the enlightened person that I am, and the Christian I was brought up to be, I do not for one second believe that faith in God comes under the duress of the sword. But that the tactics that the Muslims be employed be used against them. What Anne said was no different than Jonah saying we should invade Africa and colonize it. If America is going to spend its resources becoming involved in a conflict or economic endeavor, then TOTAL immersion should take place.

Oh, good grief... that Jonah.

I figured you were referring to the Biblical Jonah, re: Nineveh -- I have a habit of framing any question of Ethical comparison in Biblical terms (what other Standard have we?).

It goes without saying that Jonah Goldberg's call for re-colonizing Africa was immoral and absurd. a completely unjustified proposition (unlike Ann Coulter's statement, of which at least the first two clauses -- "invade their countries and kill their leaders" -- were arguably quite justified).

Yes, Jonah Goldberg is a moral idiot; the disadvantage here being that if Ann Coulter is regarded as Goldberg's moral equal, it's really an insult to the poor girl. At least she got part of her thinking correct.

Your references from the Bible do not stand in this situation.

With that, I have to take issue. The Bible always has something relevant to say to these kind of situations in life (or any situations in life, for that matter).

And using Bible reference to beat up MY particular beliefs is a kind of jihad I find offensive.

"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn". I wouldn't care if you did find it "offensive"; the Word is supposed to be a Stone of Stumbling and a Rock of Offense to many.

But in this case, I'll admit to the misunderstanding that I thought you were equating Ann's column with the warnings of the Biblical Jonah. My fault; I guess it wouldn't occur to me to use Jonah Goldberg as an ethical Standard of comparison in any case, so the faux pas is mine. Mea Culpa.
