How many people can make such a thing? It would be only a few nuclear states such as Iraq and Pakistan with both the motive and capability of doing this. (Or maybe China... in a sinister plan to make us go out and buy all new equipment, from guess where)
I'd expect the planes' electronics themselves to get killed, downing the planes. But if they survived, there's an easy answer to the landing problem: flares.
Popular Mechanics published an article recently showing how a device can be built for about $400 that has a devastating effect on electronics over a limited area. The synchronized use of such devices could paralyze the country.
In 1999, Fox News disclosed that China has obtained (stolen or given) EMP weapons technology (non-nuclear) from four of our eleven secret labs.
Recently, a Tennesse radio station got zapped by an EMP blast from a government installation nearby. It not only knocked out all of their electronics, it fried birds in flight in the area.
I have written two articles on the EMP threat that are available on request by E-mail to jimrarey@mediaone.net.
Jim Rarey aka Medium Rare
Actually a very cool movie, with a great soundtrack too.

"I had a dream that was very strange. Everything was black and white and there was no sound to be heard. In the dream the sky was cloudless and it seemed to be a few hours after midday. Everything was calm and there were no birds in the sky. From where I stood I looked up and could see numerous crisscrossing contrails from jetliners traveling high in the sky. To my amazement and horror, for no apparent reason, the planes began falling from the sky. I could not determine the reason for this, as the aircraft appeared to be intact, and there was no indication of distress or damage to any of them. As they impacted the ground numerous fires were started and I could see the smoke from many of them in the distance all around. Suddenly there was a bright flash from the western horizon. My instincts told me to seek protective shelter. I managed to find cover by laying in a drain culvert just as a tremendous blast wave filled with all manner of litter and debris roared overhead."Comment 3 following:
To: semajSounds like a EMP Burst, followed by a NUKE!, But I am no expert.

-Softwar!-- has tons of National Security info-
"Has that clinton "legacy" made you feel safer yet?"
Apparently, a lot more.
TALK, TALK, TALK!
If a terrorist has a nuclear device, why would he only use the EMP for damage? He wouldn't! The terrorist would use it to destroy an major metropolitan area, guaranteed.
There are ways to construct EMP devices, and they cost a whole lot less than nukes.
The writer needs to research before he starts pulling his articles out his butt and publishing them.
Correct, comercial airliners electronics are not "Nuclear hardened."
Well, for starters, if the device was small, one KT, and he wanted to maximize the effect, an EMP burst could have a more devastating result than bringing down a few square blocks of a city. Having said that, I still agree with Medium Rare that an EMP attack is achievable by other means. Who knows what goes on in terrorists' strategy meetings? I know I don't know.
These terrorists have nothing to worry about. They have free access to this country, can do as they wish here, and if they get caught...no biggie, cuz they know that there are proper PC procedures that America will use in treating them. They're like shadowy demons. And they will NEVER be stopped as long as the govt/sheeple keep their PC blinders on.
The govt has declared a long war on terrorism. They said they will go after the terrorists AND those who aid and abet them. Too bad they aren't smart enough to realize that THEY are amongst that enabling group.
"Any country capable of delivering a nuclear weapon to an American city could be capable of detonating that weapon in space above the North American continent," he said.
Yes, there are a handful of nations that could put a nuclear weapon in space above the United States, but none of them could do so secretly. We would know exactly which country launched such a weapon, and there would be no confusion about this being an attack by a particular country. Terrorists, even with the help of foreign governments, are nowhere near being able to do this.
