Absolutely you get extra credit. What can you tell us about your dad's Iwo Jima experience?

He was a Navy Corpsman (Pharmacist's Mate Second Class) with the Fourth Marine Division/Fourth Medical Battalion. He was helping wounded Marines when a mortar shell hit and killed his stretcher partner - and badly wounded three of the six on his medical team. Dad was temporarily paralyzed from the waist down when shrapnel impacted/entered near his spine, and spent eight hours unable to move in the sand before evac. (If you know much about Iwo, you can imagine what that was like!) His first cousin - one of his best friends - was a Marine (5th/28th) who was KIA on Iwo Jima on D+12.

I'm pretty proud of my dad, and I have the deepest respect for all veterans of Iwo Jima.

Thank you for asking, and thanks for the extra credit. :)

Thanks for sharing that. We're proud of your dad too. I'm proud of my son-in-law right now who is on the USS ENTERPRISE, our first nuclear carrier. It looks like they are pretty busy right about now.
