Ashcroft is asking for the exact same guidelines (not laws) to catch terrorists...that Giuliani used to cut the balls off the Mafia. Now try to argue that New York is a hotbed of repression.
Try to remember Clinton nearly destroyed this country without any of these proposals. For 40 years the Democrats created laws specifically to tie the hands of our intelligence agencies in the name of Socialism. Ashcroft is just trying to regain some ability to fight back.
If you really care about the country you'll use your irrational hysteria against the Democrats and for more conservative elected officials.
