I've been reading posts here for a while and I've noticed that whenever people (like breed) state facts or personal opinions whose mere existance threatens the cookie-cutter 'christian conservative' ethos they are either completely ignored or a slew of antagonists will resort to personal attacks... For all the rhetoric that is spewed about the alleged evils of dogmatic 'leftist' ideology one would think those opposed to such would be more open-minded.

I think maybe you are missing the point. That's why people come here! There are some places were it's verboten to suggest that an average Joe should be allowed to own a pistol. There are divergent points of view around here, you just have to look for them.

There are other sites which are not conservative, and if this one doesn't suit you, I'm quite sure you are entirely welcome to ignore it. The reason you do not is because you know that, while personal attacks do occur, you can learn something from a great many thoughtful posts.
And you learn little or nothing from a "liberal" site, because they only echo the superficiality and negativity which is mainstream journalism. Few people listen to "liberal" talk radio, for that very reason.
