This is true. I've read that Marco Polo was astonished to find Nestorian Christians in China when he arrived there. There was also a Jewish presence there. Although that has mostly been wiped out through forced assimilation over the past 50 years.

We think of Afghanistan as the end of the earth, but once ot was not far off one the most traveled land route in the world, the Silk Road. Lots of people went along that road before the Polos. Toynbee--I think it was he--once pointe out that in 1492, Sarmarkan lay near the center of the civilized World and Constantinople was definitely a "western" city.
