While the open borders lobby—which now perhaps should more appropriately be known simply as the "Treason Lobby"— has for years ignored, sneered at and denounced as "racists" and "xenophobes" anyone who warned of the consequences of mass immigration, some of those consequences became agonizingly clear on Sept. 11.

Were any of the terrorists illegal aliens? Weren't they all here legally? How would your desired changes in immigration law have prevented the 9-11 attacks?

Only an idiot or a traitor would allow thousands of Iranians, Iraqis, Syrians, Saudis, etc. to come and go as they please. This is exactly what our government has done.

Looks like the administration is gonna ignore the expired visas and allow business as usual.

Or as Jorge Bush said of the Clinton mess when he took office---It's time we move on!!

Lets round 'em up, deport 'em, and seal the stupid border!!

Of course they were. They entered legally but then flouted the law as far as the duration of their visa. Or they came in on a student visa and never went to school. This is illegal and they then become illegal aliens. Roughly 40% of our illegal aliens are people who enter legally but overstay which makes them illegal aliens. Most of the remaining 60% were never legal. They just crashed our borders.

We need fewer abortions, more solid families with a good number of children and fewer immigrants. Only bring in immigrants who have some brainpower or something else to contribute. Many of our illegal aliens should be forced to get the hell out as this recession  deepens, which I think it will.

If we really want some Mexican lettuce pickers here then make them the first to be forced to have a national ID and be super strict about them only being temporary guest workers. Let them be vetted as much as those at airports.

If our asleep at the switch government cannot or will not protect us from the terrorists they let into the USA, and there are more 9-11 level attacks, it will come down to the 2nd amendment way of protecting ourselves from the terrorists living among us.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) is proposing a six-month moratorium on foreign student visas to give the INS time to get an effective tracking plan running.

Similarly, Sen. Christopher S. Bond (R-Mo.) said schools should be held more accountable for foreign students they sponsor who may violate the terms of their visas.

I posted this on another thread but it seems to fit in on this one to.

No system for tracking

Once a visitor is allowed into the United States for a temporary stay, there is no reliable system for tracking whether
they have left as scheduled.

That would not be that hard to correct.  Credit cards have shown us the way.  Simply issue a card that can be scanned with the
departure date programed into it.  When they leave the card is scanned and they are credited with leaving.  The data base
could show any card that hasn't been turned in by the departure date.  Problem solved as to tracking overstays.  Second,
anyone who doesn't leave in a timely manner should then be rounded up and deported.  If it is a second offense then give them
some jail time first to discourage such actions.

The Immigration and Naturalization Service has no system for the timely monitoring of whether foreign students or
workers admitted to the United States have even shown up at the schools or workplaces named in their visas, much
less what they are studying or doing on the job.

This problem to shouldn't be that hard to monitor.  These people don't just show up and say I want to go to school or I want a
job.  They have mad prior arrangements for this.  Make it incumbent on the school or the employer to report anyone who
doesn't show up.  We are talking about aliens here after all.  The same card that tracks whether they leave or not could be used as proof they showed up at the school or job they were scheduled to show up at.

None of this in any way limits the freedoms of American citizens but would limit aliens to the activities they came here for.

We are in a computer age, lets use them for more than video games.

When our government gets serious about controlling our borders it will be done.  When profits are second to national security it will be done.

The ball is in the governments court, lets see what they do with it.  We will see where the priority's are won't we?

athur"I see that you are still defending the indefensible. "

You are wrong. I'm not "still" defending them, I'm just beginning to defend them, apparently.

The way I read the article, the authur athur arturh writer is saying that mass immigration is bad because some of the immigrants are going to be terrorists.

Well, I can agree with that. But how do we decide how much immigration we should have? Should it be based on the unemployment numbers? If aculturation is the criteria, how do we measure the rate or level of aculteration?

In any event, sealing our borders is impractical if not impossible. The only other way to enforce immigration laws is with random checkpoints in every city to check if each person's papers are in order. Maybe laptops that get downloaded each day with everyone's name and ID number along with their citizen/resident/tourist status.

Perhaps we could implant ID numbers in everyone's skull that could be scanned at all elevators, grocery stores, etc...

No one is going to do anything, so those of us who long ago recognized the problem might as well say "I told you so". Even though your proposed "will you listen now?" is certainly the right approach.

Our current crop of "conservative leaders" worship Ted Kennedy's and LBJ's 1965 Immigration Law. That's the one they're defending like a pack of pitbulls. It's Dubya who appointed deposed Sen. Spencer Abraham, R-Middle East & Open Borders, to his Cabinet- and until Abraham's sent packing I don't expect anything of substance to be done. I will take more horrors on the scale of 9-11 to arouse the public to demand that something be done about our casual ideas on immigration, asylees, etc.
