ZAGREB, Sep 28, 2001 (Deutsche Presse-Agentur)
Six former Croatian military police officers were apprehended Thursday evening in the Adriatic town of Split on suspicion of war crimes, state-run HRT television reported.
Two other police officers, also suspected in war crimes, remain at large.
According to police sources, eight man are suspected in the killings of two Croatian Serb civilians, Nenad Knezevic and Gojko Bulovic, as well as two prisoners of war.
Allegedly, all the murders took place at the former Yugoslav National Army (JNA) "Lora" military base in Split during the 1990s Balkan war, after JNA withdrew its troops from Croatia and the base was handed over to Croats.
The daily Jutarnji list, in its Friday edition, reported that civilians were arrested in 1991 on suspicion of "armed rebellion against Croatia", which had just proclaimed its independence from Belgrade. The victims were then executed.
The prisoners of war, according to the daily, were JNA soldiers of Montenegrin origin who surrendered to Croat troops after fighting near the coastal city of Dubrovnik.
According to human rights organizations, the "Lora" base was the site during the war of many torture sessions and slayings of both civilians and POWs.
Croatia´s state news agency HINA reported that the Dalmatian Committee for Human Rights had submitted documents and testimony about the alleged atrocities.
But, the investigation into the events was launched only recently, following the State Prosecutor´s Radovan Ortynski announcement in Nacional weekly earlier this year.
Thursday´s arrests are part of the massive, ongoing investigation into war crimes committed un the Croatian side, which was announced in Nacional last month.
I know about 2 dozen Serbian refugees from Split. There stories are harrowing and terrifing!!
U
Serb propaganda organ no doubt?
Hey you clod, who said Croats are trying to hide thier crimes? The fact Croats are arresting there own people proves they are ready to accept responsibility for thier crimes. I wish I could say the same for the rest of the Balkans.
If we don't hear from you for a while, we'll know why!
What are you implying??
