we decided to NOT TALK POLITICS at all that time!

Yaelle, I'm in a similar situation with a lesbian/super-liberal sister-in-law. She and her girlfriend are coming here in December for a couple of weeks. I've had to make the decision between keeping peace in the family or blasting her away with my politically conservative arguments. I've decided that familial peace is more important. I have a mental list of "safe" topics: my daughter/her niece, the weather, her job, my home business, the weather, sites to see in the Phoenix area, and the weather. It's going to be a long two weeks. LOL

Re: your above "safe" topics. Ask your friends how they "feel" about Freedom and Patriotism.

These should be safe avenues of discourse. If not, show'em the door.

I'm thinking about forgoing holidays with my sisters and in-laws. They're all Dems and invariably one of them starts a tirade against Republicans and/or Bush. I've actually been in ten on one situations (I'm the one) arguing my side. The saving grace is that I always have the facts on my side because yes, my sister and in-laws are emotion driven and have a paucity of facts at their disposal. My male in-laws do at least shut up when I'm slamming radical feminists. The ugly little secret is that even most male Dems intensely dislike feminists. At least in my little world they do.

Yes, most of my family is liberal too, and I have to hush a lot there, too. But in this case, at least one will start pouring forth with liberal claptrap: OF COURSE the conversation will center on current events, which we all know are the attacks, war, etc. I feel so strongly about these issues that I don't want to be polite and sit there and let the liberal nonsense just HANG in the air.

I am so grateful for so many good ideas here tonight. I wish I had a TelePrompter!
