What's going on with the fonts?
Posted on 09/27/2001 3:52:09 PM PDT by steveegg
What happened to the fonts around here? Seems when I look at responses, things are blockquoted and in an odd font.

What happened in 131? I don't have the problem on any other thread or from 1-131 on this thread

I'm glad it's not the beer!

Give me a minute to preview it in Netscape.

John, I guess you didn't really ask for our opinions but since everyone is unloading then I might as well do likewise. With all due respect, I'd rather not have the indentations in every post unless I choose to offset a quote in that manner. The reason that all posts are indented now is so that people will no longer be able to spoof posts.
Previously, I could have done a post consisting of, for example:
I love Al Gore, Bush stinks, and let's hear it for the terrorists.

Wow, you're one sick puppy.
By posting the above, I could make it look as if you had posted a pro-terrorist post. But now with the indents, it will no longer be possible to convincingly fake anyone else's post.
On another thread, John has explained that that's the reason for the indenting.
Personally, I also think that it makes it easier to spot the beginning and ending of long, multi-formatted posts, which is a good thing.

If you're talking about this thread, it's something in reply 131 for us Nutscape 4.77 users.

If it ain't broke, don't screw with it. What was "broken" up until today was the ability of someone to screw up all subsequent posts to a thread because they forgot to close their tags. That had annoyed me for years.
What was also broken is that threads were vulnerable to being ruined by malicious use of "extreme" HTML. John has now filtered out the more abusable HTML features.
Just think of it as FreeRepublic's way of protecting the place from terrorist acts. :-)

Try pulling it; see if that works.

LOL!

One thing I didn't notice until I fired up IE 6, Netscape (at least 4.x) doesn't give that cool blue line for manually-blockquoted material.
To: John Robinson
John, is there a way for us to do the equivalent of the "old style" blockquote?
I used to be a heavy user of "blockquote", because it allowed me to format my posts nicely and offset certain items.
I'd really rather not end up with big batches of inappropriate italics and blue lines...

Well, thank you so much for clearing that part up for me. I didn't realize that had been a problem. Sometimes it is hard enough to express myself as it is and I surely don't need anyone messing around with it afterwards.

Hey, everything looks cool in IE 5.0 on my Mac. Now I can see what everyone was griping about on the font too! Have to agree, it's a little too big
To: Dan Day
No dice; the italics and blue line are hard-coded.

John can't hear you; he's too busy playing with the font. ;^)STOP FONTLING BY BROWSER!!

There should be something similar to Text Size under the View menu (at least there is on IE 6 for Windows). BTW, what is reply #131 doing here?
