The number of background checks for gun purchases in California has increased 42 percent in the two weeks since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York and the Pentagon, the California Department of Justice said Tuesday. Although the department would not speculate on the cause, local law enforcement and people on both sides of the gun-control issue attributed the increase to a growing sense of vulnerability and fear.

"People are scared right now," Sacramento County Sheriff's Capt. John McGinness said. "And because of that, they are going out and buying a gun. I'm not surprised by it, but I wouldn't say I'm pleased with it either."

Typical JBT attitude. Sounds he's rehearsing rhetoric for his own run for the sheriff's slot--being a good "police chief" who "supports reasonable gun control." Take a hike, Captain.

'Green said he thinks an increase across the state could be caused by the start of hunting season...'

Nope, I can't believe that it is hunting season. I have seen folks at the local pistol and rifle range shooting firearms that are not what I would go hunting with.

The worst scenario may have been realized in Spotsylvania, Va., where the parents of a 3-year-old boy were charged after authorities said he accidentally killed himself with a pistol brought to his home after the attacks.

Kyle Phillips died from a gunshot to the neck Sept. 15 after he found a gun hanging from a curtain rod in the bedroom where he slept, authorities said.

Marie Claire Phillips and her estranged husband, Matthew, were arrested Friday on charges that include felony child neglect and leaving a loaded firearm within reach of a child.

Let's see if I understand this warning by the newspaper report of something that has nothing to do with the article, but a lot to do with anti-gun bias, "a 3-year old climbed up on something so high that he reached a firearm attached to a curtain rod??" Something sounds really strange about this. Maybe this kid, had he lived, would have been a future Gold medal Gymnast. Then again, maybe the gun was hung so low over a crib or something that the parents wanted the child hurt.

I was more concerned with safety latches on cabinets so my 3-year olds would not get into the cleaning supplies, then them climbing up to the height of curtain rods.

the gun industry has created "a myth" that "gun possession creates greater security."

I thought it had been proven that states with armed citizens had lower violent crime. Doesn't that equate to gun possession creates greater security?

2 of those are mine. Unfortunately I couldn't lump them into the same day for just 1. I appologize to those keeping count.

after he found a gun hanging from a curtain rod in the bedroom
Yeah I believe that's what happened. 3 year old can get a gun off a rod (what the hell is it doing there) and squeeze the trigger while pointed at his neck.
Wouldn't the kid try to immitate his (stupid) parents and point the gun away from him? This story is very fishy and it seems like the parents shot the kid.
And why even quote this episode in the story? Just more anti-gun propaganda.

"I'm not surprised by it, but I wouldn't say I'm pleased with it either."

It's not government's place to be pleased, displeased, or anything else! Government's responsibility is to guarantee the right of the people to keep and bear arms.

Why shouldn't the police captain be for reasonable gun control?

He gets more funding the more crime there is. He gets to console (sp?) the victim's family when crime happens. He gets medals, promotions and raises when he solves crimes. He gets more prestige and power the more he fixes the crime problem in the streets.

Tracks with what I saw Sunday - I mentioned it on another thread. The usual traffic might be one gun and not even that every week at the counter where I was standing. I watched no fewer than five get bought - easy to count because everybody had a ream of forms in front of him or her. Never did get my piddly little bottle of solvent bought.

Oh, and these folks weren't "scared." They were ticked off.

My guess is that this Spotsylvania, Va. father shot the kid, to avoid paying child support.
A big California BUMP to the newbie gun owners!

"The seller said people buying guns have not shown any interest in buying devices to lock them up"

Ohhh dear how horrible!..... Locking them up makes them nonweapons you maroon. Most of the y2k buyers were already gun owners(BTW it was a great way to justify buying more guns..."but Honey we need one of those in case the electronic locks at the zoo fail")and knew what they wanted. People buying guns now are neo-enlightened liberals and crisis patriots, who just want a gun so they can tell their friends they are prepared.

My son works at a gun store right here in Signal Hill, CA. and there hasn't been a 30 min gap between people studying the booklet or watching the video so that they can take the Basic Firearms Safety Test.

P.S. please don't flame me with Pro RTKABA arguments, I am the first to say state tests to buy a gun are an abomination, as are all infringements on the right to keep and bear arms. However it's nice to see they're biting the liberals who enacted them in the butt.
