It's going to take some major work, but I'll have control over images. Width, height, etc. I will be able to deny images that are too wide or to tall, or too many kilobytes. The poster of the thread will be able to turn off all images. Each user will be able to turn off images, or not show images that exceed a kilobyte threshold. (Ie, you will be able to disable images that are greater than 32k. Good for modem users.)

And I'm going to make posting images a super-snap. It will be as simple as putting <photo> in your post, and the posting program will prompt you to choose a photo from your photo album, or upload one. It will also automatically find stuff like <img src="c:\my documents\my picture.gif"> and prompt for an upload.

Additionally, I'll make it so posts can be truncated after a certain number of bytes. Again, good for modem users just skimming the thread.

Before I can do any of this, I have to rewrite the forum software, and reduce bandwidth consumption by a large factor. (Because hosting images is going to consume most of those savings--but I'll be able to turn images off when bandwidth is limited.)

*applause*

EXCELLENT work, and I love the sound of the "things to come".

I know it's not at all easy, but believe me when I say that we'll greatly appreciate it.

Heck, the "no more problems from dangling tags" *alone* is a great leap forward.

And that's just the HTML side. There will be good text only facilities for those not wishing to muck around with HTML.

The poster of the thread will be able to turn off all images.

? in the sense that the poster would create an image free thread ? what
would be the advantage of that if a dialup user can turn them off on demand?

Hope you have the space for the graphics. One picture is worth what, a thousand words?

Whatever you've got here, it replicates my image toolbar as I scroll. Cool! Java?

My 3 posts were all carved out of the thread because they threw people off too much. I think only my posts were cut out. Even Dan Day's extended image was kept in.

So I win the contest. Next I go after Osama Bin Ladin

Images can be distracting if the poster really wants a discussion and not an art show. I'm not sure if anybody will use it. I'll likely stuff such an option on an "Options" page for the post as to not clutter the main posting form.

Nah, nothing that high tech. :-)

I just posted an image with the following inside the "img" tag: "height=20000 width=20000"

The browser gets confused when asked to scroll something that's blown up so severely, so it ends up copying the wrong parts of the screen around.

Space, as in HD space, is not an issue. Disk is cheap. Very cheap. However, space, as in bandwidth, that could be a problem. Since FR is charged a flat rate for bandwidth, and the available qty is known (10 mbits), I can push images all day long until bandwidth reaches about 9.5 mbits, then they would be scaled back. At 9.75 they would be disabled entirely. BTW, UUNET bandwidth has been extremely reliable. Signed up for 10 mbits, and they delivered 10 mbits. I highly recommend 'em.
