Let's face it...the only reason we have as many military installations as we do is the Cold War. We needed a lot of bases so the soviets would have to use up a lot of their nukes on them and might miss a few...and putting all the hardware in a few spots was strategically stupid. Now...we probably do have too many bases. There are many facilities that could be combined...especially facilities in the same town..ie Randolf and Brooks in San Antonio.

Before the flames come...I'm 14 1/2 years AF and I know a little about the subject and am not putting down the military.

Years ago use to have Lackland, Randolph, Brooks, and Kelly. They will never close Lackland or Randolph.

And of course,this all makes erfect sense now. Nothing more clever than putting all your eggs in one basket where a terrorist version of a National Guard PFC and take out the wole fleet or our entire armor capability with just one suitcase nuke. Not to mention what they can do to our Navy be just sinking a few ships in the middle of a couple of channels.
