Many cervical procedures have a better outcome than lumbar procedures. Anterior cervical fusions, example, often do
very well. I'm not sure whether they do these at the C-7 level--and you didn't even say what kind of operation you would be getting--but I really wouldn't worry a whole lot if you have a good orthopedist or neurosurgeon.
(My point is that if you have non-surgical options, a good doc will advise you. If you have no options, worrying makes even less sense, in an odd way!)

Wow, after having a root canal this morning I thought I was feeling bad...I'll go cry in the corner.

You know, that's a great way to look at it. If I have no options, there's nothing to worry about. And I don't know whether I do or not at this point.
The first thing they have done is order an immediate MRI. Now I will get to fight Tricare but if the doc is on the right track I will try to have more confidence in them. Yesterday my biggest concern was world events and the second place winner was tie between a lupus flare and how freakin' HARD physical chemistry is. My oh my, our focus can turn selfish in a real hurry can't it?
