I second everything you said in this post. Back the Pres for sure and our guys fighting, but, beware of "trojan horse" fixes.

...Let me tell you something,,, buddy, this lirbertarian disagrees with that. I try to look at individual issues. I don't judge an individual by what is on the cover of his book. BTW, have you taken a poll? Or is this just more stereotypy?

No one is checking their opinions at the door. It's just for the duration of the emergency, some of us feel that national and personal priorities need to be put on the back burner while our troops are in harm's way.

It's just for the duration of the emergency So the new proposed laws are only temporary? They will expire shortly after? Good, one could start to worry that they will take root and expand like WOD.

I'm with you! When I heard the Pres. use this term it raised the hair on the back of my neck. I don't like it a bit!
To: Jim Robinson
Well, I agree entirely with you. I've been extremely ticked at the response of some Libertarians to this emergency. Some are stepping up to the plate, but others seem more concerned about the breath of their rights. While I understand these concerns, I feel me all must unite around the flag, and defend the country.
I would say that in order to exercise your rights, you have to actually be alive. I think it's pretty obvious that Mr. Bin Laden and his band of criminals intend to kill as many of us possible, thereby allowing us to exercise our rights from the grave.
Personally, I think that we should now exercise our right to kill Mr. Bin Laden. There simply is no other solution to this problem. If this means tightening up security for our country, then so be it.

I agree entirely with you. Browne's actions since 9/11/01 have been downright disgusting. This is war. We must fight to win.

It's just for the duration of the emergencyWhat a pity. You've neglected your history books. Any idea how many of the FDR-inspired laws were "just for the duration of the emergency"? How many of them still exsist? Most of us are up-to-date on this stuff. Are you?

Amen. He's not alone. There are many stepping up to the plate and exhibiting fine patriotism, such as TKEman and others. Thanks for your comment. Yes, it's nice to be on the same side for once. We all must rally around the flag, and support our troops. There simply is no other rational choice. We must win the war.
After the war is over, we'll return to our regularly scheduled program.....
Trust me on this. :-)

After the war, can I really trust FReepers to demand that any 'temporary' restrictions on financial privacy (to cut off terrorist $$, of course), any 'temporary' ID card requirements, any 'temporary' WOD-like suspensions of the 4th amendment, etc. be removed? We cannot even get rid of the damn mohair subsidy.
Sorry guys, but I just don't trust y'all to fight to repeal something signed by Bush that you would man the ramparts against if signed by Clinton. I honestly don't.

Nobody said anything about accepting violations of our rights and liberties ala FDR. (or at least I didn't)
I recognize that our nation is at war. I recognize our need to weild military force against those who have killed 7000 innocent citizens of our nation. I recognize that our enemy deserves no quarter, and I would readily see them crushed under the overwhelming might of true justice.
But that doesn't mean I accept the Orwellian measures which may be in store for us over the next several years. I still oppose the National ID card. I still oppose socialism. I still oppose the draft (although I'd volunteer in a snap if needed). I still oppose violations of the 4th amendment.
The evil monsters who did this are the people who need to pay.... not the liberties of American citizens.
Don't confuse my support for military action (which is clearly necessary and just in this case) with support for further encroachments of state upon our liberties. They are two distinct questions.

On this war, the unpopular does not translate to the right.
But it is also both fair and true to say that on this war (on any war, for that matter) the popular does not always translate into the "right," either. By the way, whatever you think of Mr. Rockwell's actual views, do try to bear in mind the article in question on this thread wasn't written by Mr. Rockwell himself, merely published on his site. It is always wisest to condemn a man or woman for what they do believe or say (while upholding and defending always their right to say it), rather than what you think they believe or say.
To: Jim Robinson
Jim, I am not exactly sure why you pinged these song lyrics to me...I personally think that this columnist had a good point and I welcome people to disagree with me. What does disturb me however, is that you seem to be insinuating that I am not patriotic and do not love this great country that I am blessed to live in. I would fully support a war against whomever is responsible for these terrible acts against our country--I am a conservative's conservative and a strong Christian. But I am wary of George W. Bush's leadership and personality traits, sorry, but even if he gave a couple of great speeches; saying something and then actually following through in politics is something of a statistical anamoly.
I know that you probably think that I am somehow being unpatriotic in posting this thread and I don't mean to be at all; but I think that if your website is to be named 'Freerepublic' the name should at least stand for something, including free speech.
