WJR-AM in Detroit just reported that the intended target of the 4th plane that went down in Pennsylvania was the THREE MILE ISLAND nuclear facility.
Makes me all the more grateful to the heroes on the plane who thwarted this plan.

Get a grip dear. The terrible part was personal. I had two kids, lived downstream from that plant and remember hubby trying to get me to leave town. I love nuclear power. Quit insulting me for goodness sake,,if we insult each other over every damn post we will never get anything done what with replies, counterreplies, etc.

Regarding post #9: the Detroit area has one of the largest populations of Arabs in this nation (if not the largest). WJR just might have credible evidence from a source in the area.

Someone upthread posted all the airplanes that didn't get off with connections to possible hijackings. I guess we ought to be glad the damn airlines are always late, canceling flights, etc. If we had decent airlines that took off on time and didn't cancel I guess we would be in the soup now. Hurray for good old american airline inefficiency.

Did they have to share the 71 Virgins or do they each get 71 Virgins?

According to publicly available assesments of potential terrorist threats to nuclear facilities, it is not the reactor that is most vulnerable. It is the stored spent nuclear fuel. This stuff is secured such that a car or truck bomb would not likely get to it, but an aircraft would have a clear shot. In the case of a jumbo jet going into one of the known storage facilities, it is considered to be one of the worst possible scenarios. Worse by far than the WTC. I don't see how it could be worse. The fuel storage pool is a quite robust structure. Not as strong as the containment building but no pushover. Sure, it contains spent fuel, but in general it has undergone quite a bit of decay. I may be wrong, but it is my sense that the source term for a storage pool release has got to be orders of magnitude smaller than for a core that has reached equilibrium burnup.
Impact would be the primary mechanism for storage pool damage. Fuel elements have very high melting temperatures. The zircalloy cladding would not weaken even at sustained high temperatures like you would have in a jet fuel fire.
Plus, it would be just damn hard to hit the thing head-on. You're talking about targeting a specific structure within the overall plant, not just plowing into the side of a building or smashing into the general area of the plant layout. Its possible, sure, but a cut above the difficulty of landing in the Pentagon.

Buc, here we go, replies and counterreplies. You said I was encouraging the anti nuclear bunch or something like that. I was not. I was saying it was terrible and by my definition it was and some upthread have posted similar feelings. My one little post here does not threaten to enbolden the greens for cripes sake. I think auto crashes killiing people I know are terrible, does that make me a neo luddite. You sir, would hasten to tell everyone not to post anything having to do with any subject you feel strongly about. You would presume to mind read, mind control and shut off all discourse. That is not why we are here. Warning, my next counter reply will be longer and more boring than this, so I suggest we call a truce. And another thing, you remind me of certain men I know who are always telling women to shut up...sure you wanta get iinto this kind of posting war?? I think not.

Responding to your last post which I saw after posting my last post. I know that, I know that. At the time, given what we were hearing, not knowing what was going to happen, having my physician husband telling me to take our babies and leave town, WAS TERRIBLE. Are we clear now. Please quit lecturing me.

The high heat in the WTC fires was probably attributed to the great air drafts created by the height of the towers, i.e. 110 story chimneys.

Just a couple questions for ya, Bucco.
Would you rather your house was built with cinder blocks using fly ash or uranium tailings?
If Flight 93 had crashed into TMI, what type of filters would be required on the downstream water plants drawing from the Susquehanna?

Nope. Those things couldn't withstand a fly landing on em. Very poorly designed.

The plane was traveling at full throttle and was not as maneuverable as they thought. Apparently you have some information contrary to official releases which stated the impact was at 345 mph.

Bucky, Bucky, Bucky,,,quit while you are ahead dear. I am old enough to be your granny and mean enough to make you pray for release from my grip. Plus I will call on the Ladies Guild and they will arrive, pearls flying, and make you hope Ralph Nader will come to your aid.
