Would Ernie Pyle have refused to share his information with the military during WW2?

It is my understanding that reporters who were allowed on the fronts in WWII were in uniform...ie in the military as reporters. Can someone verify this?

Did anyone see the A&E program Biography profiling bin laden? There was an ABC journalist, Bill Miller was his name I believe. He interviewed the terrorist and may be the one North was alluding to. Perhaps the FBI can bring him in for questioning. I imagine his recalcitrance may very well meet its match when they bring out the thumbscrews.
