good, well-measured response. now, if, let's say syria, is found to be behind the terrorists that hit us next (unless you think wtc was an isolated event), and after we bomb them up, allocating already thin military resources to the sea off of syria, and then another attack comes from, let's say, iraq, spreading our response capability even more into the gulf, and then another attack comes from, let's say, iran, spreading our resources to the point that if china took taiwan we would have no recourse, then would you say we should light off a warning nuke in their desert and give them a short time frame to start eliminating those terrorists in their borders (and sure as sh*t on their payrolls!)? my point is, how many thousands, hundreds of thousands, or more, of our friends, family and neighbors would it take before we scare them of the potential of being hurt so bad that they deal with the snakes in their own borders? are you willing to spend the rest of your life in houston under martial law? you need to understand that these states will not change their hatred for us, goverenments like the 1979 ayatollah's breed these militant muslims and, despite what most want you to believe, the majority of muslims around the world (they knew they'd get shot if they got caught doing much of it here) had a party the night of our loss on 9-11. this is their goal, and they might condemn terrorists to the media to avoid being crushed, but in reality, their muslim aim, for the majority of muslims, let's say outside the us for this discussion, believe america must be destroyed for islam to reach it's full potential. i say make the big warning now, don't put our troops in position to die fighting a war that won't send the message the enemy can hear or understands anyway, and make it clear that this will stop or their nation will cease to.

A real problem would be a place like Pakistan where most of the people are reportedly sympathetic to the Taliban. The government there, set on notice by a nuke, would try its darndest to clean up... but might be too weak to finish the task before getting offed by a mob uprising. The alternative, turning Pakistan into a parking lot, doesn't sound too appealing either... but war is hell.
