If they really oppose the radicals, then there are many ways they could respond, from an anonymous phone call reporting where the radicals live, to a quiet knife in the back some dark night as the radical returns home
The radicals could not survive for long if there was a significant number of Muslims who knew who they were and were willing to do something about it
I'm afraid that the Muslim community can more realisticly be divided into "violent radicals" and "silent supporters", with the latter possibly disapproving of the tactics, but never enough to actually do something about it.
What I was trying to point out was that there were some (probably only a handful) of early Christians who desired martyrdom so much that they would disturb a pagan ritual so that they would be put to death by the authorities. Enough of them did this so that the Bishops spoke out against this form of suicide. Now we're asking the moderate Muslims to also speak out against suicide in the name of their religion.
Ideally, I'd like to see competing "branches" of Islam do the work for us, even if we have to create those branches ourselves. Foment discord and promote confusion at the religio-political level.
Too late to learn when they are taken hostage and their cries for mercy are falling on deaf ears.

You're 5,000+ times right. But we do need to reason with the moderates and inform them that either they're with us or against us. There is to be no more supporting of these killers of our children and babies.
To all: Thanks for making this a very thoughtful and informational thread. I need to get back to work putting out those resumes.
That might have been the official reason, but I think the real reason was more likely a combination of "politically correct" censorship by leftist bookstore employees, plus fear of harrassment by Muslim groups
That depends upon the objectives that define a victory. Occupation need not be one of them. Destroy their ability to wage international war (i.e. terrorism), isolate them, and destroy the states that supply them.
Among the states that support and supply the Taliban are Saudi Arabia and China. Each is going to be delicate to deal with
After studying the terrorist problem, you put the solution into a nutshell. How do you do it? :)
This basicly reems to be a replay of the contest between the West and Communism. During the Cold War, we had people over here stirring things up, who turned out to have been financed from Moscow. (See the Venona intercepts). In retrospect, it should have been obvious: the agitators did not have day jobs. How were they paying their bills?
Similarly, what we have here are mullahs being financed from out of Saudi Arabia, who recruit stunted personalities into radical Islam and get them all pumped up about fighting the infidels. As long as we just concentrate on the terrorists, we get nowhere, as the mullahs will just produce five for every one we catch. And there will be an every-increasing number of mullahs in the US recruiting terrorists, as long as the Saudis have money to pay the bills. Meanwhile the Saudis can walk around with innocent looks on their faces, as they are not directly connected
It's like trying to get rid of weeds. If you hack off the stem, it will just grow back. You need to dig it out by the roots. The Saudi money people are the roots
There's evidence that people with advance knowledge of the WTC attack made millions of dollars from trading in the stock market (see Profits of Doom). The lack of mainstream coverage indicates that the people at the end of the money trail are too sensitive to touch. We need to touch them anyway
