Christians are unpopular folks today. I mean by that, anyone who takes seriously biblical truth and biblical principles will find himself on the sharp end of angry stares if we dare speak the truth in the midst of todays national crisis. To what do I refer? America has all of a sudden gotten very religious. There are vigils and candlelight prayer services on every corner. People who hadnt said God except in profanity for years are all of a sudden very pious and reflective. Radio personalities who were focused upon tax cuts or some other political issue on Monday, September 10th are now mulling over the role of evil in our world. The past week has turned the landscape upside down in many ways, to be sure. Lest anyone think this new religiosity is a reason for rejoicing for Christians, it most surely is not. Oh yes, we are hearing old Christian hymns being sung. Ostensibly Christian churches were full this past Lords day. But there is no such thing as partial Christianity, nor is there any such thing as a Christianity that stands side by side with Islam, or Judaism, or Buddhism, and says, We worship one God under many names. And surely, there is no Christianity that does not speak of repentance from sin. The new religiosity of America has two basic foundational pillars: there is one God, unknown, but addressable under any variety of religious epithets, who has revealed absolutely nothing of objective value regarding His will regarding worship or human behavior; and second, this God has no wrath; knows nothing of sin or judgment; and hence, any person who dares to say that God would punish a person, or a nation, is a glowing heretic to the new American religiosity. The problem is easily seen: Christians believe, fundamentally, of necessity, that there is one true God. This true God is not Allah. This true God is not Krishna. This true God is not the god of Joseph Smith or Buddha or the Sikhs or the Bahais. Our God went to great lengths to differentiate Himself from all the gods of the peoples and religions that surrounded His ancient people, and that for a purpose He Himself proclaimed: He seeks true worship, worship based upon a knowledge of who He is in reality, based upon His revelation to man. He does not grant to man the freedom to make images of Him, to worship Him in a manner that pleases the creature rather than the Creator. God is particular about His worship. His worship is intimately, vitally connected to truth. Without truth, there is no worship of the Christian God. And the truth revealed by the Christian God in the Scriptures is without question when it comes to the matter of His law, sin, rebellion, punishment, wrath, and judgment. One of the most amazing things to observe is the willingness shown by evangelicals to jump right onto the we shall never utter a word about wrath or sin or punishment bandwagon. Is the remnant so small that almost no voices will be raised to cry out against this foolishness? To withhold the truth about sin and judgment out of fear of mans opinions and feelings is to make the cross of Jesus Christ a travesty! There is no cross, there is no sacrifice, where there is no sin, no offense that demands forgiveness be wrought through His perfect sacrifice! The person who refrains from speaking of sin and judgment to win a person over is doing so through unfaithfulness to the very gospel itself! And to what has such a person been won over? Where is the gospel when there is no sin to be forgiven at Calvary? But it is right here that the new American religiosity clamps its hands over its ears and refuses to hear. America wants Gods blessing. America wants God to protect us from more horrific visions of airliners flying purposefully, relentlessly into our national monuments. We want God to be near us as we board our aircraft. We want Him to protect us from the horror of thinking about what it was like when the towers collapsed. We want Him to guide our military and allow us to flex our muscle and launch our missiles with impunity. We want a blessing God, a caring God, who simply panders to our wants and whims. This is the God of the new American religiosity. But what America does not want is a God who is holy, who is just, and who has revealed His will concerning how we, His creatures, are to live. America is a land soaked in blood. We glory in violence. We are so selfish, so bound in our avarice, fornication, and sexual lust, that we murder our own offspring in the womb (or at birth as in partial-birth infanticide). Our hands are covered in blood, and yet we think lighting a candle and lifting them up while mumbling God Bless America is going to bring Gods favor? Listen to the words of God to another nation that likewise was religious but refused to hear the word of repentance: So when you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide My eyes from you; Yes, even though you multiply prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are covered with blood. (Isaiah 1:15). Is America so arrogant, so utterly self-absorbed, so diseased by religious liberalism and philosophical subjectivism, that she thinks she can ignore all of history itself and demand from God blessings when she refuses to repent of her evils? Do we really need to be reminded that Planned Parenthood has killed more little children in our land in the week since the attacks than died in the attacks themselves? Are we so blind? Surely the scourge of abortion would be enough to warrant the unleashing of the wrath of God, but there is so much more! We are a nation on a crusadea crusade to wipe from our history books every vestige of our former religious past. The religion of scientism, with its chief idol in the person of Darwin, has become enshrined in our very governmental policies. There is no creator, we are told, to express His law for us in the first place. We want to banish God and His law from our courtrooms, our schools, our every public institution. If God says it is wrong, we celebrate it. Every form of sexual debauchery is found in the land. The airwaves are filled with programs that exalt fornication and adultery. Major film stars are lauded for the most sinful lifestyles. Homosexuality is not only turned into an acceptable lifestyle, it is made a political right, a political force, a test-case for being properly tolerant. The list goes on and on and on. The widow and orphan is oppressed, while the nation indulges in every creature comfort, sits back in its luxury, looks about upon the bounty of the land, and says, Ah, what the labor of my own hands, my own intelligence, my own insight, has accomplished. Religious liberals may mock our literalistic reading of the Bible at this point, preferring to simply label us fundamentalists and ignorant, but the fact of the matter is, they know they could never win a scholarly debate on whether the Bible actually teaches that these things are sins which must, inevitably, bring Gods judgment upon a people. They know that is exactly what the Bible teaches. They are just embarrassed by it, and hence seek to suppress that truth. As I said, Christians who believe the Bible are an unpopular lot today. If they speak in accordance with the Word they may well find themselves being called "unpatriotic" and "judgmental.". In fact, given that the new orthodoxy demands of us the confession Everyone is Gods child over against such clear biblical teaching as John 1:12 (remember how Christians refused to say Caesar is lord and died as a result?), we must be ready to count the cost in engaging in formal, cultural heresy by speaking the truth. We need to realize: this new American religiosity can take on the same kind of fanatic zeal that kept the hi-jackers hands steady all the way to their end. May God grant His people the strength to proclaim loudly Gods demands upon a wicked nation, and may He be pleased to bring repentance and revival in a land where darkness reigns.
"However, I don't share them. And as I said in a previous post, this is the case because I find the concept of god(s) unreasonable (supernatural entities, omniscient beings, etc.) and so I cannot believe in a particular god. You gave me your reasons for your beliefs but I don't find them convincing."
I gave you a couple of reasons. You consider them based on an unreasonable premise.Fair enough.I will add that I find the concept of 'nothing' exploding being the origin of our universe unreasonable.
"These not only contradict each other in some aspects but very often conflict with contemporary science (and there are many sites on the net dealing just with this topic)"
Yes there are many sites...both for and against. As far as it being in conflict with contemporary science goes...so what? I already told you that I simply don't accept...."In science that's of course an other issue and it's done all the time because that's the way science works but concerning religions that's always a futile venture.".....why?....(your words)..."No,I don't believe I am immune to this,I'm human after all"(#154)..."Well, man is selfish and therefore he is tempted to breake the rules mentioned above for his own advantage"..."and if you break one of those rules (you're a human after all)"
You made some good points about the umpire analogy.I actually meant that as a dig at naturalism and pointed out that a lot of things happening in the world today are linked to it.ie:homosexuality, abortion, moral relatavism etc etc
"What's important here is that people believe all that. Whether these gods exist or not is secondary"
So folks should believe it regardless of wether it's true or not?
I believe I have good reason to believe the bible is the word of God...you believe you have good reason not to.I am trying to point out that as far as reality goes...especially as regards humans...there are many good reasons to believe it.
You counter that you find the concept of the supernatural unreasonable....and therefore cannot believe.I don't find the concept of the supernatural hard to believe at all....I've yet to hear a scientist quantify, love, hate, trust,LIBERALISM (or is that simply chemical reactions and electrical impulses?)character, attitude, free will etc etc...they are NON-physical realities which work in us and through us on a daily basis...it's only the naturalistic minset that tries to reduce everything to chemical reactions and electrical impulses (1 Corinthians 2:14 "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually {something the naturalist simply says doesn't exist,in spite of what the real world points out}discerned.)
What do we have right here and right now as a result of this?....thousands of people drugged up like zombies because they are depressed, after all, sadness is simply a chemical imbalance right?...physical image has become everything whilst what's inside a person (ie:spirit)is considered irrelevant(and we wonder at the moral slide into the sewer that is happening all around us!),or rather, nothing more than chemical reactions and electrical impulses....and what do we have as a result of this "doggy mentality" (as CS Lewis puts it)?...women and girls dying of anorexia because it's now become what's on the OUTSIDE that's all important. An entertainment industry that churns out gratuitous sex and violence with impunity because scientific (read:naturalistic) studies can't show any quantifiable connection between "fillin' yer head with that garbage" and consequent behaviour patterns in society.Ever wonder what drives the 'culture of death'? Romans 8:6 "For to be carnally minded is death".
Conveniently handing those issues of morals over to religion...which science tells us is usefull but not actually real would be fine were it not for the fact that naturalistic science constantly harps on about how what they believe is objective and what anyone else believes is subjective....and therefore so are morals.
"bollocks"...you can say that again!
"The problem with deities however, is that you never know what they really want."
You really think the ten commandments are that hard to understand?....when America was founded there didn't seem to be that much of a problem understanding what God wanted.
As I said before,we can argue this issue endlessly it seems. You have your reasons and I have mine.In the end history will have to show us which world view is the correct one.....as I believe it IS.
Trying to argue against the atheistic world view is difficult...it is a hotch-potch of phantoms...thumping the pulpit when it comes to what supposedly happened in a primordial pond billions of years ago but strangely silent when it comes to present day reality concerning that which is most important...the human condition...preffering to hand-pass such trivialities as morals over to the relevent church authorities etc....it's hard to argue because it's hard to nail down.At least Biblical christianity has the cosmological balls to put it's complete world view on display for any or all to have a go at....and plenty better than you or I have tried...it still stands.
"to quote Einstein: "If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed".
The actual quote..."A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death." [Albert Einstein, "Religion and Science", New York Times Magazine, 9 November 1930]
here's another quote from Einstien...
"The real problem is in the hearts and minds of men. It is easier to denature plutonium than to denature the evil spirit of man." [Quoted in: Freeman Dyson, Disturbing the Universe, ch. 5 (1979)].
Maybe we are indeed "in a poor way"...and by the look of it,things certainly have not improved....neither can they as long as naturalism reigns in so-called acedemia....because naturalism ignores the fundamental reality that humans are first and foremost "created in the image of God" ie:they are a spiritual being. It's all too easy to look at the state of man's history (and in particular his inhumanity towards his brother) and throw up our hands and say "oh well it's human nature I guess" (you as much as did so yourself)...the trouble is that atheism drives that nature...the bible adresses it,understands it and knows it's only cure...it adresses REALITY.
Thanks again for your reply.
May God bless you BMCDA.
I don't think that scientists claim it was 'nothing' that exploded to create our universe. What they can say at least is that they don't really know how the universe looked like before the Planck Time (10^-43 s). One reason why high energy paricle colliders are build is to simulate the conditions in the early universe. We may never be able to simulate the conditions before the Planck Time but to say Goddidit is not an explanation at all and it is as good as saying that you don't know. The latter is just more honest (because you don't know whether God did it, you only assume it to be the case). If one accepts Goddidit as an answer further investigation on that particular issue don't make any sense. In the past there are many examples for this and only people who did not accept that answer were able to find out what really caused such phenomena (e.g. lightnings, earthquakes, floods, draughts, plagues, etc. were originally attributed to God).
"In science that's of course an other issue and it's done all the time because that's the way science works but concerning religions that's always a futile venture."
What I meant with that is that in science new theories are peer reviewed by other scientists, they try to find it's weak spots, if it's possible the theory or parts of it are revised but if the whole theory is FUBAR then it is discarded. In religion that never happens because religions are dogmatic. They claim to have The Truth (and that's not only the case for the Christian religion) and therefore you don't question them because dogma isn't subject to questioning by definition. In science theories are not dogmas, they are only "true" beyond reasonable doubt and they can always be revised or replaced by better ones.
"Well, man is selfish and therefore he is tempted to breake the rules mentioned above for his own advantage"..."and if you break one of those rules (you're a human after all)"
Where's your problem with that, after all man IS selfish. You cannot deny that. But he can also be altruistic, however he is never either the one or the other. For a society to be stable altruism is necessary. If a member of a society is too selfish he is punished or expelled OTH if he's to altruistic he is exploited by others. So you see it always boils down to the point to be as atruistic as necessary and as selfish as possible. If these traits are not balanced you have only disadvantages: either you're being exploited or you're no longer part of that society. (That's the way Capitalism works and also the reason Communism is not realizable [I mean the real Communism and not that failed experiment in the Soviet Union, China, etc.]).
"What's important here is that people believe all that. Whether these gods exist or not is secondary"
So folks should believe it regardless of wether it's true or not?
No, absolutely not, but it seems you have missed my point. What I wanted to say is that such a believe can be useful to keep the people obeying the rules without having to explain them the logic and reasoning behind those rules (most of them wouldn't understand that anyway). Therefore telling them to follow those rules because _____(fill in the gaps the name of your preferred prophet, deity or other supernatural entity) said so and if they don't obey they are punished by _____(fill in the gaps the name of your preferred deity or other supernatural entity) because he/she/it sees everything is more effective that explaining. (It's the same with little children and Santa Claus but I think I mentioned that before)
So you see that has nothing to do with that being the 'True Belief' (whatever that may be) in order to work as long as people believe it to be true. That's why Voltaire said: "If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him". (He meant the concept of God here because in such a case you can only invent a concept)
I've always advocated that you should follow the rules of your society not because someone told you so and you fear punishment but because you understand and support them. But alas, for some people this is not the case and therefore you need an authority that 'tells' them what's allowed and what's not.
You counter that you find the concept of the supernatural unreasonable. I don't find the concept of the supernatural hard to believe at all.
That's the point why I think we can discuss this topic ad nauseam without being able to convince the other one.
I've yet to hear a scientist quantify, love, hate, trust,LIBERALISM (or is that simply chemical reactions and electrical impulses?)character, attitude, free will etc etc...they are NON-physical realities which work in us and through us on a daily basis...it's only the naturalistic minset that tries to reduce everything to chemical reactions and electrical impulses (1 Corinthians 2:14 "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually {something the naturalist simply says doesn't exist,in spite of what the real world points out}discerned.)
You really seem to be convinced that there is a 'ghost in the machine'(human body). But then what does this ghost do and what is the result of those electro-chemical reactions. Today we have methods to measure the activity of the brain. We can even map it in three dimensions . We can therefore see which parts are involved when that person talks, feels pain, anger, hatred, love, plays chess, etc. The functions of the different areas of the brain have been determined with people that sufferd head injuries: some were totally different persons, others showed no emotions or didn't recognize their relatives and thought they were strangers, and so on. In short their personality changed. If there is something immaterial in the brain how could that have been altered that way. We may still not know everything about our brain, which is the most complex structure we know, but I can say we know a lot about this organ and as far as I know there is nothing that points towards such an immaterial entity. Whether you like it or not our selfs are the results of these ominous electro-chemical reactions but that doesn't mean you're less valuable. (Here is an article that deals with this topic, very interesting IMO)
You really think the ten commandments are that hard to understand?
That's not the problem. I could go into lengthy details why I think the ten commandments are not an ethical principle to live life by. I don't want to evade your question but this post is already to long therefore I point you to this article which pretty much sums up my point of view and is better formulated than I ever could.
...when America was founded there didn't seem to be that much of a problem understanding what God wanted.
And I don't want to live in that time ;-) But now honestly, I don't think that that was the case. If that were the case why are there so many christian denominations that of course agree on many issues about God but also disagree on many. If there wasn't that much of a problem to understand what God wanted there'd be only one(1) denomination. Further the constition of the US is a secular one - it is neutral to religion.
No, it's not because atheism only states that you don't believe in a god (or in the supernatural). To quote Charles Bradlaugh: The Atheist does not say "there is no god", but he says "I do not know what you mean by god; I am without the idea of god; the word god is to me a sound conveying no clear or distinct affirmation. I do not deny god, because I cannot deny that of which I have no conception and the conception of which by its affirmer is so imperfect that he is unable to define it to me. Everything else is not part of "atheism", as your example of the primordial pond. That is abiogenesis. Religions on the other hand have changed over time. True, the Bible, Qu'ran, etc. are the same but their interpretation has changed a lot. There existed practices in the past (e.g. slavery, burning of witches or infidels, etc.) which are no longer acceptable today. Atheists were always those who did not believe in god(s).
"A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death." [Albert Einstein, "Religion and Science", New York Times Magazine, 9 November 1930]
Exactly what I'm trying to say. You can have no religion i.e. be an atheist and nonetheless show ethical behavior. And just because you are a naturalist doesn't mean you condone everything that can happen because it's natural; it only says that everything that happens has natural causes (not supernatural ones) regardless of whether it's good or bad. But that doesn't say anything about your ethical behaviour because naturalism makes no such claims. You can however be a humanist or objectivist, who are indeed ethical (and a lot of humanists and objectivists are atheists and/or naturalists).
As I said in an erlier post, I don't deny that there are passages in the Bible, Qu'ran, etc. that may be useful for our life in these days but I'm absolutely opposed to accept them unquestioned.
As I said before,we can argue this issue endlessly it seems. You have your reasons and I have mine.In the end history will have to show us which world view is the correct one.....as I believe it IS. We may not agree on very much but this I can accept without reservation.
Now I think that is enough for today.
So long
The fact that you think I deny that tells me a lot.
"As I said before,we can argue this issue endlessly it seems. You have your reasons and I have mine.In the end history will have to show us which world view is the correct one.....as I believe it IS. We may not agree on very much but this I can accept without reservation"
Then if God actually does exist...as I obviously believe He does...you have at least left the door open that eventually He may bless you.
Thanks for the discussion, thanks for your patience and thanks for your replies friend.
