He addressed Senate "President Pro Temporary" Byrd. I know it was just a slip and he didn't mean it, but it was a bit of a chuckle.
Having said that, the callers on C-SPAN after the speech were totally and completely stunning. At least two democrats called in say President Bush and his speech changed them completely. One said she is no longer a democrat or a republican, but an American. Another said she was inspired. Awesome.
Even from a distance, she makes one shudder from the cold.
I thought one essential thing about it was how clear it was. It isn't easy to communicate all that he got across in 40 minutes. He not only inspired us, but he told us where we are going and why in a way that the vast majority of Americans can and will understand.
I too couldn't help thinking about poor Al Gore. I think he would try to do the right thing, but I don't think he would know how. "We will bring the full sanctions of the Dingell-Norwood act to bear on these villains. I will fight for you!"
Focus. That is what has impressed me so much about Bush since the 11th. The kind of focus that you only get when you know who you are and aren't trying to impress anybody.
Or, what's the same thing, he's the Un-Clinton.
The best speech I have ever listened to.
It inspired. It summed up an almost imposible situation with elequence.
I think years from now we will be refering to this as "The Speech."
For eight years I have been turning off the TV when the president came on. I have tried explaining to my children that the Presidency is worthy of respect even if the President is not.
Tonight I was proud to have my son listen to President Bush. Tonight we got to see how great the office of President of the United States is. Eight years of slime was put behind us tonight. We are proud Americans again.

Hillary on the other hand....what was she thinking? At least she could have tried to fake it. The people of NY were watching, and hopefully seeing what they have elected. They have been affected by this tragedy, obviously, more than the rest of us and are looking for leadership in these difficult times. I'm glad they are observing her for what she truly is.
We need to pray for President Bush, I'm so afraid for his safety. This speech was so awe inspiring and powerful his enemies will hate him even more. I worry about them trying to harm him.
I'm so proud of my country and trying my best to instill this in my children during this time in our history.

I just got back home this minute, and I haven't read any of the reaction here yet. I couldn't wait to chime in with my plaudits. I work at a NYC newspaper, and the whole newsroom stopped and watched the speech as one. 100% agreement that it was his finest hour. And I can imagine that there might be some Hillary comments here on FR...geez, what was with her? Even the libs were laughing at her half-hearted clapping and sourpuss demeanor.
After the speech, I walked in the rain through beautiful midtown Manhattan, feeling so proud and blessed to be an American...

Americans are asking ``Why do they hate us?''
They hate what they see right here in this chamber: a democratically elected government. Their leaders are self-appointed. They hate our freedoms: our freedom of religion, our freedom of speech, our freedom to vote and assemble and disagree with each other.
They want to overthrow existing governments in many Muslim countries such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan. They want to drive Israel out of the Middle East. They want to drive Christians and Jews out of vast regions of Asia and Africa.
These terrorists kill not merely to end lives, but to disrupt and end a way of life. With every atrocity, they hope that America grows fearful, retreating from the world and forsaking our friends. They stand against us because we stand in their way.
We're not deceived by their pretenses to piety.
We have seen their kind before. They're the heirs of all the murderous ideologies of the 20th century. By sacrificing human life to serve their radical visions, by abandoning every value except the will to power, they follow in the path of fascism, Nazism and totalitarianism. And they will follow that path all the way to where it ends in history's unmarked grave of discarded lies.

I recommend reading some history on the etymology of the phrase Separation of Church and State. See how far back you can follow its derivation and apply those meanings to the founding fathers of American political thought. Hint: Faith is distinct in its meaning from religion. The issues I speak about regard a relationship every person is afforded to have with God. If a person doesn't respect the Son, he doesn't respect the Father. If a faith doesn't respect the Son, it fails to respect the Father. If a person respects all faiths which fail to respect the Son, then that person fails to respect the Father. Fear of the Lord is the beginning of all wisdom. The Lord is always just.
I am so glad that Bush is President rather than you. Who are you to say who does and who does not "respect the Father"? Your attitude is precisely the kind that motivated those who persecuted and killed my ancestors. Perhaps you can share with us what role if any you think Jews and other non-Christians would be permitted to have in your theocracy.
