"he proceeded to hammer away in a righteous way at
the need to retaliate, to reconcile our feelings and make
a measured response but to retaliate"

Holy crap. You're conservative? At Macalester????

Woof. That's got to be awfully damn lonely. You have my enormous sympathy and respect.

Okay, let's give the liberal cafeteria Catholics a chance to go there on a diplomatic mission.

"an appropriate response", "so that nationalism doesn't get out of control and do something worse than the attacks", "the innocent people fleeing their homes in Afghanistan",

All seem like appropriate things to pray for. Who really thinks things ought to be innapropriate? or that innocents *should* die? barbarians and terrorists, thats who.

Don't blame you in the least for being truly pissed, and even ready to kill on behalf of your fellow countrymen. You need not feel ashamed in the least for feelings of wrath in this case.

At the same time, the day will come when we all face a God who judges perfectly. We will *all* need mercy when that day comes. Let us strive to pinpoint with righteousness the targets of our wrath while we have time to live, and plead for mercy before almighty God before our last hour dawns.

Whatever you do, be ready to defend your fellow, feckless Americans, despite their apparent lack of sense.

It's not what those people said, it's how they said it. Being sincere and looking down on our country are two different things.

What bothered me (besides the whole "love them" thing) wasn't that they cared about innocents there, it was that they didn't care about them here.
