During the Gulf War, the Italian Air Force was to participate with fighter - bombers, to be refueled by US tankers on the way. Of this force, all save one got lost on the way to the refueling, and turned back. The one, a gentleman known as cucciolone, or "big puppy," continued and was about the only plane shot down. He landed unhurt, and within two hours was rescued by the US Army. He never dropped any ordnance. On return to Italy, he was given a ticker tape parade as a war hero. (Believe it or not, this is a true story, told to me by a friend in Milan).

What in the holy heck is going on with our "supposed" allies? The words "abject cowardice" come to mind ....

Why when America is in distress, all defecate on her? This is the type of moment of truth when you find who your real friend really is.

"...100,000 Italian soldiers were involved in various peacekeeping missions abroad." I suppose this gives us great confidence in U.N. peacekeeping missions...

Italian Defense Minister Says Term "War" InappropriateI agree, it was inappropriate to ram murder all of those people and call it war. Oh, nevermind, he means us.

Italian rifles for sale. Never fired, dropped once.
Do you know why the second Italian Fleet in WW II was built with glass bottoms? So they could see the 1st Italin Fleet.

History has shown that appeasement always works well when dealing with a power mad tyrant.

Well I see nothing has changed with those brave Romans. My Dad used to tell storyies of what weak & cowardly soldiers the Italians were in WWII. Even their own ally, Germany, had little use for them. Fine, stay home and spin that pasta. Leave the dirty work to real men.
As usual, looks like we'll have to rely on the British, Israelies, Canadians, and Australians.

Since the Barbarians sacked Rome, the Italians have never met an army they didn't surrender to.

What happened to activating the NATO clauses where an attack on one is considered an attack on all?!? Last I checked, Italy is still a member of NATO (although if that's their attitude, maybe they shouldn't be). I just hope their defense minister has no real power over the decision to send troops. We'll see where their president stands. DTH

I think that we need to take the words of Colin Powell to task - we need to judge our relations to other countries by they stance they take on terrorism - and add to that the help they give America in their time of need. The only countries that I hear are giving unconditional support for America are Austrailia and Great Britain. Other countries are fearful of the task at hand because it will not be easy.
To all of the liberal Europeans who don't want to join us in the fight, I ask this question - when are we going to get the money + interest on that money back from the Marshall Plan? When will we get the money back + interest on that money for all of the equipment + people who died on the beaches of Normandy from a spiteful French Government? Or were they happy to speak German and be split into 2 nazi client states? When the Soviets tried to block off Berlin, did America respond with "oh well, I guess that we'll just go home" - yea right. The Italians - oh yes, the Italians, who fought so hard against the poorly armed Ethiopians in the 1930's - but when faced with the Allied invasions, quickly switched sides to the side that was to win. Few remember that they used poison gas against the Ethiopians - the last country to do this until the Iraqi's against their own people. Being that all of these incidents occured over 40 years ago, most liberals don't know about them because they haven't lived through them. Frankly, I haven't lived through them either - but I am a student of history, and I know the role America has taken on - pushed by Europe to get into the First World War and pushed by Japan into the Second World War.
America is the country that the world turns to for rescue against Evil. If a Jet Liner crashed into the Louvre in Paris, who would France turn to? If a bomb went off at Brandenburg gate while there was a gathering, who would Germany call? If a terrorist bombed Rome, who would the Italians call? You know that they wouldn't have the capacity to stop it on their own. They would call America.
It is time for America to question it's "friends" in Europe. It is time for America to question the NATO alliance - something that takes a lot of American money but give no results. While I think that Germany will get on the winning side in te end, I question France and Italy's loyalties. They count on freedom - freedom granted by American lives and American Dollars but we haven't seen anything in return.
To the liberals in America who want to sit on their hands and hope that evil won't show it's head again I say to you this... evil is inside of the perimeter already. It is evident by the arrests that are being made by the hour. For each possible terrorist we arrest, how many do we miss? How many have been let into the country? How many have come in illegally? These are the questions that must be answered because Western Civilization is under attack and yet again, America must defend it.
