Just for reference, how wide is the island at that point, how large is the area of destruction?

The picture is at once horrifying and heartening. Horrifying because of the damage and the loss of life. Heartening, because even that little bit of Manhattan Island contains twenty times as much wealth and enterprise as the terrorists managed to destroy. Makes me want to shout, "Is
that the best shot in your locker?"
No, check that. It makes me want to sing:
O beautiful for patriot dream, that sees beyond the years,
Thine alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood --
From sea to shining sea!
Take heart, all.
Freedom, Wealth, and Peace,

I have only been there once, but I did have the sensation that I was at the tip of an Island. I think perhaps 10 to 15 blocks wide, but a New Yorker would surely know for sure.

It's important to keep the economy growing to produce the wealth necessary to wage the war. God isn't always on the side of the big battalions but He sure favors those with the most money. Yamamoto is supposed to have answered (in response to a comment from the Japanese Army that the US was in a depression, 25% unemployment, 50% idle factories): "They still produce twice as much steel as we do."

Great pic thanx! OUR ROCK You were always there-high in the sky Standing proud as planes flew by. I remember the day I was your guest A view for miles-I felt so blessed. In '93-they wanted you hurt But they could not knock you down to dirt. As years went by you still were there Giving the skyline your fair share. Then that day they made a turn Fanatically obsessed you shoud burn. First the one then the other NYC in smoke was smothered Like a fighter gone too many rounds You bravely stood your ground. As glass rained down and flames shot high You saw your many people cry. Then with a gasp-you lost your crown Our hopes and dreams came tumbling down. You tried so hard to stnd up tall Yet in the end you knew you would fall. You always seemed to reach to heaven Sadly you left us on 9-11. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!

Just for reference, how wide is the island at that point, how large is the area of destruction? A diagonal line from the end of the Brooklyn Bridge (on the middle left in this picture), to the far corner of the dock on the bottom right, is a distance of 1.2 miles.
The yacht harbor closest to the WTC is about .1 mile square.
As you look at the picture, recall that the towers were about .36 miles high. Imagine the damage if they had fallen over, rather than collapsing straight down.
The NY Times had a map of the destroyed buildings, including all in 7 in the WTC, as well as several on adjoining blocks. Just heard that a tiny Orthodox church, with icons donated by Czar Nicholas II and housed in a building dating to the early 1800's, was destroyed.
