The article also fails to mention that George W. Bush gave the Taliban $47,000,000 as recently as April of 2001

Did you know that this accusation is the #1 "talking point" in e-mails sent by groups who are blaming the US for its "imperialism," truly frightening websites filled with hate and organized under the umbrella of "peace protestors."

A few facts about the money to Afghanistan, the Islamic terrorists finance much of their operation through the sale of heroin. We paid for the destruction of Poppy fields. Not here to quibble about right or wrong, but this "George Bush gave the Taliban $47 million (are you sure, the last number I heard was $43-by Bush-haters)" is deceptively simple.

Just a question:

Did we bother to do any verification that the poppy fields had been destroyed?

That's a good question. Assuming satellite images verify this, but I haven't found any written account. I do believe that the Bush administration will do it's dam*edest to do each job right, not simply seek to deceive the public through slick PR moves.

I've been posting this shamelessly, includes links to Clinton State Dept. terrorist reports (they knew, did ~nothing), speeches on the UN SC floor/Clinton press briefings (lots of tough talk, ~no action), and the curious fact that Clinton waited 'til Dec. 20, 2000 to impose even tougher sanctions on Afghanistan (they never worked) if Osama wasn't handed over in 30 days (coincidentally (?) inaugeration day for GW). Clinton's final gift to GW?Dec.20, 2000: Give us Osama in 30 days... inaugeration day, new, tougher sanctions to be imposed.

Yes, it was $43,000,00 but is pursuing a war on drugs worth funding the Taliban?

Good question. There are some good links on the thread at #25, including an article on the "Silk Road" now the heroine road. We know that many of the top drug "kingpins" are also terrorists, including Osama, and the money pays for various horrendous attacks and infrastructure. Plenty of money was also donated for famine relief to Afghanistan. More info at the previously mentioned link and on the thread if you're interested.

Most of the true conservatives and libertarians on this forum are opposed to foreign aid -- period. We should not be funding Afghanistan or any other country, including two of the biggest offshore welfare queens, Israel and Egypt. No taxpayer should be forced at the gunpoint of IRS tax enforcers to hand over a portion of his paycheck to foreign welfare recipients.

Doing basic research on Afghanistan and the people, I was shocked at the number of relief organizations working "on behalf of" the Afghani people. Plenty of human rights concerns to whip up international sympathy and money for a cause. I understand now that a few of these "relief" agencies are actually financing terrorist cells and have lobbyists on Capitol Hill. I'm sure there are a few legitimate organizations, but it's clear Jesse Jackson school of exploitation is out of control. Look at Afghanistan today. What have these groups done except meddle in foreign policy they don't understand, leave a population stripped of spirit and self-determination waiting in ever-increasing numbers for their ration of daily humanitarian aid?
