There is another good alternative which is the state milita. Most of them take persons up to age 65 and some I think to 70. They fill in for the activated reserves.

Went down to see the recruiter today. The senior NCO (SFC) screwed the pooch ! After visiting the recruiter station Thursday, due to a phone call that morning, which confirmed the formula that adds my service time to my age, I now have conflicting information that reverses the formula. If I go active duty, the feds will only add my federal time (3 years) to the age cut-off of 35. Now they tell me I am too old. They won't count my guard time nor my reserve time. The guard or the reserves will count my total time in service which includes my guard and reserve time plus my 3 years active duty. Major obstacle to active duty enlistment now. I am searching for a guard unit or a reserve unit that might take me. That is all...

As someone who has not served and is considerably older (53) is there any way? Very good health and fitness; I'd give some of the younger guys a run for their money. High level of education (PhD in physical science). Mightn't they raise the age given the new situation? Also, is there a parallel civilian corpse which performs support functions? If I couldn't kill the bastards myself, I sure would like to equip and assist those who will.

The US Air Force recruiter stated that their enlistment cut off age is 28 years, plus, all Federal military service time, active duty, plus, all National Guard military service time, plus, all Federal Reserve military service time.

Oh, brother, does that rule me out. I had 57 months' active duty in the Air Force (1982-87) and, because of the age I was when I enlisted (I was actually 26 when I began my active duty with basic training), I was not afforded the option on reserve listing for two years to follow my hitch. By this formula, my cutoff age would be near 33. Unfortunately, I am almost 13 years past that cutoff.

And here's the odd part. I was an intelligence analyst when I was in the Air Force.

Sometimes I think It might be good to bring back the draft.

When tens of thousands hit the recruiting stations to enlist voluntarily in the space of only three or four days in these circumstances, the proof is there that the draft (aside from having no legitimate place in a purportedly free society) is superfluous. When the cause is just, Americans step up of their own volition. Always have. Always will.

This is driving me crazy. I am going to hit 40 next week, and I had heart surgery 10 months ago. I couldn't pass a PFT if you chased me with a .45 in one hand and a bad discharge in the other.
I served in the Marine Corps during Reagan's first term, and I would go back if I could.

Any other former Marines (or others) that couldn't shake the feeling on Tuesday that you should report to your unit, but had nowhere to go?

Perhaps some sort of Volunteer Federal Auxiliary unit could be formed, of all us prior service folk who are too old to go?
