My neighborhood had candles on the doorsteps and flags flying. My son's girlfriend drove home after the candles were being lighted and said people were out everywhere on street corners, lining major roads with candles, flags and signs. It was quite moving.
The various stations reported the candlelight vigils across America -- how spontaneous they were, and that it seemed a few emails among friends first mentioned the possibility of the vigil and then the email was posted on the Internet -- and the suggestion of a way to mourn as a country took off. The power of the Internet confounds the press.
