Thank you for pointing that out. Indeed I believe exactly what you say, and I'm surprised to see that I nowhere earlier in this thread discussed that point. My favorite way to illustrate that point is to discuss the Rodney King riot.

The home video of the arrest of Rodney King made sensational news. But the entire tape, as commentated on by defense lawyers, shows behavior on the part of Mr. King which--the first Sgt. Stacy Koon jury held--explained the behavior of the police sufficently to make the police not criminally liable for what Mr. King endured. But the interesting fact is that the videotape made even more sensational news after editing than it did initially--for the very understandable reason that all portions of the tape having any bearing on the reason for the police behavior were edited out.

Endlessly rebroadcasting the remainder of that tape is exactly what I would have done if I had wanted to see a riot in Los Angeles. That is exactly what broadcast journalism did after the initial Stacy Koon verdict of "Not Guilty" came down. Not only so, but reporters broadcast interviews of the "No justice, No peace" activists. And to top it off broadcasters reported, in real time, where looting without police interference was ocurring.

In sum, if journalists had any other thought than to exacerbate the situation and cause the nation to watch in horrified fascination, they had a remarkably strange way of showing it. And were I a business owner who had been burned out in that riot, I would have wanted to sue the broadcasters for their very underwear.

"If somehow you nail them dead to rights in consistent tendentiousness, they will merely shrug and change the subject."

Yea, sure; to you or I they'd be quick to pull that kind of "brush-off" stunt.

Buuuttt...when "Daddy GE" & his phalanx of beancounters speak over at General Electric?
The Leftist-Socialist blather and obfuscation doesn't go too far, eh?
The Leftist-Socialists ignore Big Daddy at their own risk.
The present ilk of Leftist-Socialists running these network News & "Entertainment" divisions (spit...) understand all too well they risking losing their soapbox -- instantly.

Capitalism is the only thing which (up to now) has kept the Leftist-Socialists in-check this past decade; otherwise, I'd dare say this group (in particular!!) would've been a LOT braver, bolder in forcing their agenda down everyone's throats?

Capitalism is their enemy; &, why they dispise [it] so much.
Certainly has explained (to me) why Capitalism's demonized in each & every story they produce in whatever way they can fit-in the smear.
That can be said, regardless the medium, too; as this cancer infects the "Journalist-Class" from top to bottom with very few exceptions.

The Liberal-Socialist "Journalism" *professorate* taught this present bunch what & where the *prize* was to be had, in our kind of society.
The present gaggle of Liberal-Socialists in control weren't just taught what to do once they acquired their power; so, it'll be interesting to see what they were taught [to do] if/when that power were ever threatened or taken away, altogether.
These guys aren't just going to *evaporate* & go away as much as we'd hope & pray they'd do exactly that.

"The money in the business of journalism is in entertainment, not truth. It is that imperative to entertain which produces the perspective of journalism."

I've often heard that said; however, where does [abject] "fear" enter the equation??
The Lamestream are experts at keeping this nation beaten into a continual frenzy of fear.
Be it "kidnappings" (which have ocurred since time immemorial...), or the imminant doom we're all facing from the, "West Nile Virus" (which coincidentally is "Front Page" ever since the present administration began probing the CDC ~& nevermind AIDS) & all the other countless contrived, "Fear Of The Week/Month" news "stories" (past & present) the nation's carpet-bombed with 24/7?

You must agree, then; it's the WHO's using the soapbox & not the soapbox itself causing all the stink.
Although our constitution was written long before the mass media monster we're being strangled by today?
IF we infringe on any part -- as another wise poster reminded me just last week -- we risk some awful ramifications.

"In sum, if journalists had any other thought than to exacerbate the situation and cause the nation to watch in horrified fascination, they had a remarkably strange way of showing it."

Actually, I'd think they'd have spun that ugly incident precisely as they had; in order to help 'em *point* social consciousness in the exact direction they wanted & could manipulate every step of the way.
That's why these "Journalists" always seem to be one step ahead of us.
We're not taking into account the Lamestream Leftist-Socialists KNOW where they want to take the nation; while, we're merely bitching about the mechanics of their actions.
We're refusing to recognize *motive*, here.
It's the Leftist-Socialist's motive which is beneath contempt, worthy of condemnation, & needing to be emphasized at every opportunity.

These are the most vile type of Socialists we're speaking about, here; they're young, dumb, & have heads freshly filled with an awful lot of plain, ol' bullshit ALL courtesy of OUR TAXPAYER FUNDED institutions of, "Higher Education."
We all know the type, too; "America Bad. America Racist. Utopia Good. Follow US to Utopia."

...modus operandi hasn't changed since Lennin dreamt-up this nightmare ideology.

Journalists have a duty to uncover the latest information, especially when its audience is feeling very literally under the gun. Their sniper reporting kept the public aware, and ultimately helped nab the bad guys. It's too bad that the relief at the sniper story's end had to be matched by the tried and false conventions of liberal spin.
Journalism is show business. Journalism's next deadline is simply "the show must go on" translated to print.

How many people died of other causes, in the area psychologically affected by that sniper, over the period of time he was operating? (Note: the smaller that number, the better we have things; the more good health we are taking for granted!) Journalism did not merely play to the public's burning curiousity about the sniper, journalism created that curiosity in the first place.

Journalism, let's face it, profits for an episode of danger. And if one looks at the coverage of the Rodney King verdict and subsequent riot it should be obvious that journalism has the ability to create episodes of danger quite legally. But somehow the person who writes a meladrama never makes his own profession, or those peculiarly likely to enter it, the villain of the piece.

The villain of the piece will always be someone upon whom the other characters in the play must and do depend. A natural candidate, IOW, for membership in the Republican Party.

The biased sniper aftermath

Thomas Sowell:
The Police are always guilty
either of "letting the situation get out of hand"

or of "overreacting".

And the poor/minority who are actual or potential crime victims suffer for the effect that has on policing their neighborhoods.

OpinionJournal.com THINKING THINGS OVER -
On child abuse and breast implants, our editorials are vindicated.

The Power of Modern Fads

BY ROBERT L. BARTLEY
Monday, October 27, 2003 12:01 a.m. EST
A couple of disparate events sent ripples of satisfaction through our editorial-page offices last week. A Massachusetts parole board at long last recommended Gerald Amirault for parole, and a Food and Drug Administration panel recommended that silicone breast implants be returned to the market.
At the time these Star Chamber proceedings were conducted it didn't matter that the famous--and famously "conservative"--editorial page of The Wall Street Journal correctly pointed out that these were nothing more than witch hunts. And what public interest was served by them?

Retrospectively we see clearly and officially that there was none. But at the time these stories titillated the public, and thereby interested us. The essence of my brief against broadcast journalism is that it is great at interesting the public, and counterproductive at serving the long-run public interest. And also very determined to obscure the difference between the two.

Just as with the Stacey Koon (Rodney King) riot and the Florida 2000 litigation horror, journalism was de facto in league with trial lawyers working against the public interest in both these cases. Journalism got its interest from the public (thus its advertising dollars), and the plaintiff bar got its class-action dollars. The public got a hangover.

It's frustrating to see all this, yet to understand that the judiciary is, by and large, coopted by journalism. There is only one SCOTUS justice who is willing to let his legacy speak for itself without reference to what journalism says of him in the here and now.
