What's going to be especially tough in this struggle, Jeff, is the fact that we're fighting an enemy that blends in with the populace. Just exactly who/where do we hit? I can honestly tell you that I don't envy those who must make those decisions based upon, at best, limited intel.

I'll go so far here as to say that I think it's impossible to wage the war these animals started without major cities being pounded or wiped out. THAT is supremely sad, but again........what else do we do? Sit and wait for them to pop up out of their holes and arrest them somehow? With whose police or military forces? Theirs? Even if that was possible, we all know what would happen next: more young martyrdom-bound fanatics will replenish their ranks.

The only conceivable way to quash this vicious cycle is through............viciousness. It must hurt, and hurt bad. It must be so painful that terrorists will be pariahs in these countries rather than heroes.

........and I know of no civilized person who could be happy about it.

I think we're probably closer in agreement here than we think. The real difference, I guess, is that I believe we're capable of directing our attacks to military targets and that we can avoid civilian casualties.

In horrible times, people and nations do horrible things. I think the USA is a moral nation. I don't want to see these animals destroy that part of us as well. I don't want to see us unleash wholesale desruction against a people, rather than a government and terrorist organizations. I hope I'm right. I hope you're wrong. Hell, I'm sure you hope that we can destroy this menace without killing a host of civilians.

In any case, life is about to get very nasty, short and brutish for a number of people. I just hope they're the ones who deserve it.
