War Bonds?

Doris Kearns Goodwin mentioned on the Imus show this morning that FDR called for war bond sales to help finance WWII. I was thinking that this could be a great idea now. Most of the federal budget could stay as is, and the gov't could sell war bonds to finance the War on Terrorists. I, for one, would be happy to buy them, as would millions of citizens. It would also give people an avenue to actively show support, and prevent weenie politicians from taking credit for supporting the effort after 8 years of dismantling our security network.

As an aside, Democratic Senator and presidential hopeful John Kerry (MA), who was once photographed burning someone elses draft card outside the White House, refused to say that President Bush was doing a good job. Don Imus gave him several opportunities to be magnanimous, but the Senator counldn't find the class to agree.

This is the best argument AGAINST selling War Bonds. Let the President cancel his unconstitutional spending on "education" and prescription drugs, and the immoral/unconstitutional spending on Embryo Stem Cell Research.

It would be a needless and silly expense. We are currently running a 164 Billion dollar supplus

That is a huge amount of money, more than enough to pay for all but the largest of wars. Also, we can simply run a defecit if needed. We used to run $250 billion dollar defecits. We have more money to spend on military than any country in history...by several orders. Money is not a problem at all.

Political will is the real issue. Also, basic morality is limitiing.

That's a great point. Get rid of all the extraneous spending on the unconstitutional things. I'm right there with you on that.

I must agree with other posters. The Imperial Feral Government is too big and too incompetent as it is now. The only sensible thing to do is to shut down all the unconstitutional agencies and return to the few and necessary functions defined by the Constitution.

These terrorists are making the US do some thinking, especially the tuned-out, complacent, apathethic majority. The majority of Americans are intelligent human beings but have become so disgusted with all the shenanigans of government, they have crossed it from their minds.

Previous to this attack, we were headed for open borders, the New World Order, no drilling in ANWR, disarming the public, and just being stupid in general. Now these issues have reversed and the politicians endorsing them have just been put in the cage.

Both Republicans and Democrats have made some pretty stupid statements on the issues they hold dear. Senator Daschle holding up the defense budget, John Kerry filibustering ANWR, both parties endorsing open borders, President Bush statements on open borders in the hemisphere, on missile defense, hi-tech military. and so on.

Now the US has the opportunity to make some decisions that are good for the country and its security. I doubt very much if there will be any mention of reparations, raiding Social Security and most of there inane arguments we have been hearing about. The nanny state will become the macho state once more, which is not bad.

The federal govt should only spend on defense, justice, foreign policy and provide help to the truly needy. Handouts for popcorn research and mohair subsidies can't be justified in this situation. We spend trillions of dollars and yet this terrible disaster happened. What a waste. We need a more effective govt and stop trying to fund anything that moves just because we can.
