Outraged lawmakers responded yesterday to the attacks on American soil with vows to make war on terrorists and to spend untold billions rebuilding national security and U.S. pride.

"However you describe it, we are at war," said Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott. "Terrorists are at war with us."

Several top Senate Republicans are pursuing a national-security package that would give the FBI and the CIA more authority to conduct counterintelligence, such as enhanced wiretapping capabilities

I understand we are at war. But, before people start cheering, I think we need to know just exactly what this "enhanced capability" entails. Sounds like another version of the clipper chip to me...

But Sen. Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat and assistant majority leader, went a step further by proposing to create a Cabinet-level anti-terrorism czar

Great the dems want to make a whole bunch of new gubment jobs then just go back to business as usual, how about letting our president unleash the full might of the military on our enemies? They declared war on us long ago, now it is time to reap the whirlwind!

The government keeps telling us we have to retaliate and yet their response is to limit OUR freedom. It is the ragheads who are doing this. Why are Americans the target of a crackdown?

Put the middle east under threat of nuclear attack. Make THEM fear for the very existence. NOT US!!!!!!!

Sealing our borders is a proper response and yet, from Bush on down, they want to limit the freedom of CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES!!!! God, what foolishness!!!

More of the dumbass "all thumbs" bureaucracy that screwed up horribly and allowed this shit to happen in the first place? That's a recipe for more terrorist attacks on US citizens while the Keystone Cops are busy pissing around with Barney Fife nonsense and inconsequential idiocy. Point the damned gun at the enemy, not the ally or the citizen. If not, the citizen may point it back at them and we'll do the damned job right. Jesus Christ, why oh sweet Lord why couldn't that damn plane have wiped out Congress instead? Or at least the United Nations building. Damn lousy terrorists!

I guess that CARNIVORE system the FBI has is just another post-crime, after-the-fact data collection device.

Hope they didn't spend a lot of money on it.

I think Congress should set up a committee to study the problem and issue a report. But dynamically, of course.

Agreed. Maybe we should wear t-shirts to airports that state "I am NOT an Islamic terrorist". In case airport security can't tell by looking at me and treat me as one!

Considering that Bubba apparently KNEW where Bin Laden was in December and REFUSED to do anything about it...Well, at least we know where Congress gets it from.

We now see some democracts turning to the same old thing, anything to put a road block up for the President. Some democracts now see us as the United States of the Democractic Party and so, we see the same ole, same ole with them. They will never change, if it causes the destruction of this country.

Congress should sit down, shut up, and start writing checks to improve our military and intelligence capabilities. Let the President, the Constitutionally appointed Commander-in Chief, direct any war response. Grandstanding congressmen and senators do nothing but pollute the airwaves.
